Future Islands return with new single ‘Deep In The Night’

Future Islands have shared an emotional new single called ‘Deep In The Night’ – you can listen to it below.

The song marks the first material from the Baltimore band since their standalone track ‘King Of Sweden’, which came out last year. Another song, ‘Peach’, was released in 2021 following on from their sixth and latest studio album, ‘As Long As You Are’ (2020).

Today (August 15), Future Islands made their return with a moody, atmospheric ballad. It is not yet known whether ‘Deep In The Night’ will feature on a forthcoming full-length record from the quartet.

Deep in the night/ You know, I miss you more when I’m stuck inside/ This room without you, and you’re still asleep/ I’m like a prowling lion that’s seeking pride/ When the morning finds you,” sings frontman Samuel T Herring over glistening synths and a steady, processed drum beat.

The singer then declares his love in the chorus: “I belong to you/ I belong to you/ When you take my hand, I understand/ Where you end and that’s where I began.”

‘Deep In The Night’ is accompanied by an official black-and-white music video that sees Future Islands performing the romantic single in silhouette. You can watch the clip – directed and edited by Albert Birney – above.

The group – completed by Gerrit Welmers, William Cashion and Michael Lowry – will perform as part of the Wider Than Pictures concert series in Dublin on August 24. They’ll also appear at Connect Festival in Edinburgh and End of the Road Festival in Dorset.

Additionally, Future Islands are due to support Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds in Manchester next week, and will play their own headline shows in Middlesbrough, Cambridge, Norwich and Wolverhampton. You can buy any remaining tickets here.

In a four-star review of ‘As Long As You Are’, NME described the album as “maybe an unexpected handbrake turn for Future Islands”.

“It may not be as hit-laden as its predecessor,” it added, “but it’s a refreshing record in its own right and one that throws up plenty of existential quandaries.”

Jake Shears and Self Esteem join cast of ‘Cabaret’

Jake Shears and Self Esteem have joined the cast of the West End production of Cabaret – watch the official preview video below.

Soloist and Scissor Sisters vocalist Shears will join the ‘Prioritise Pleasure’ singer-songwriter (real name Rebecca Lucy Taylor) onstage at the Playhouse Theatre’s Kit Kat Club from September 25 to January 20.

The pair are stepping into the lead roles of Emcee and Sally Bowles, respectively. They’ll take over from current cast members Maude Apatow (Euphoria) and Mason Alexander Park (Quantum Leap).

In a statement, Taylor said: “I’ve never made a secret of my love of theatre and I couldn’t be more excited about getting to make my stage debut as one of the greatest leads of all time.

“I’ve joked for years that there is no need for a Self Esteem musical because Sally’s story covers most of the points. I am artistically and emotionally raring to take on this challenge.”

Directed by Rebecca Frecknall, the current incarnation of London’s Cabaret opened in 2021. An official description reads: “Winning a record-breaking seven Olivier Awards including Best Musical Revival, this intimate and electrifying new production of Cabaret is London’s hottest ticket. Welcome to the Kit Kat Club.

“One of the most successful musicals of all time, this new West End production features the songs ‘Wilkommen’, ‘Don’t Tell Mama’, ‘Mein Herr’, ‘Maybe This Time’, ‘Money’ and the title number ‘Cabaret’ – with Berlin’s famous Kit Kat Club brought to life through the transformation of London’s Playhouse Theatre.”

It adds: “This is Berlin. Relax. Loosen up. Be yourself.” Tickets are available to purchase here.

Shears has previously appeared in the likes of Kinky Boots on Broadway and in Los Angeles. Additionally, he penned the lyrics for the 2022 London musical Tammy Faye. Elton John wrote the music for the latter production.

Self Esteem, meanwhile, played a fairy in an Oxford pantomime performance of Jack And The Beanstalk in 2017/2018. The Sheffield artist later recalled the experience on social media.

Last year, she composed the music for Jodie Comer’s West End and Broadway play Prima Facie.

Jake Shears released his second solo album, ‘Last Man Dancing’, in June.

Here’s when Netflix K-drama ‘A Time Called You’ will premiere

Netflix has announced the premiere date and released a teaser for its upcoming K-drama series A Time Called You, starring Ahn Hyo-seop and Jeon Yeo-been.

Based on the popular 2019 Taiwanese television series Someday or One Day, Netflix’s new K-drama A Time Called You will focus on the story of Han Jun-hee (played by Vincenzo‘s Jeon Yeo-been), who is still grieving her late boyband Gu Yeon-jun (A Business Proposal‘s Ahn Hyo-seop) a year after his passing.

Jun-hee travels back in time, 25 years to 1998, where she wakes in up in the body of 18-year-old Kwon Min-ju. As Jun-hee tries to figure out how she ended up in this situation, she meets Nam Si-heon, a near doppelgänger of the late Yeon-jun.

The new teaser for A Time Called You opens with glimpses of Jun-hee’s life with Yeon-jun, and their sweet moments together before his tragic accident. “Please, just one more time… Let me go back to your time,” she says, before being transported back in time.

A Time Called You is set to premiere September 8 exclusively on Netflix. The series will also star The Secret Romantic Guesthouse‘s Kang Hoon as Jung In-kyu, Si-heon’s best friend has a crush on Min-ju. Watch the teaser for the time-travel mystery romance K-drama below.

Corey Taylor sings ‘SpongeBob’ theme with SpongeBob voice actor

Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor has teamed up with SpongeBob SquarePants voice actor Tom Kenny for a special performance of the kids animation’s theme song.

While at the Huntington Comic and Toy Convention in West Virginia this past weekend, Taylor was invited onstage to perform the SpongeBob theme song with Kenny, who voices the titular character and sang the original theme for Nickelodeon’s hit children’s show.

“This is the most nervous I’ve ever been in my whole career,” Taylor said to the audience at the event’s outdoor stage. “How the hell did I get here, guys?”

Watch the performance below.

The collaboration has been a long time coming for Taylor, who has performed the song as a treat for fans at his solo shows dating back to 2011.

Earlier this year, Corey Taylor quipped during a live show that he was growing tired of performing the showtune: “I’ve written over a hundred songs and you motherfuckers are screaming ‘SpongeBob’ at a grown ass fucking man. What the hell is wrong with you?’” He then begrudgingly performed the song to raucous applause, flipping off the audience and laughing while doing so.

Taylor is set to release his second solo album ‘CMFT2’ on September 15 and will tour the UK and Europe in support of the record in November. You can find any remaining tickets for the tour here.

Speaking to NME for our In Conversation video franchise recently to promote the album, Taylor teased the release of Slipknot’s “lost” album, ‘Look Outside Your Window’. The band recorded the album in 2008 but, so far, only one track from the sessions has been released – ‘All Hope Is Gone’ bonus track ‘Til We Die’.

Elsewhere in the interview, he also spoke of his love of Kaiser Chiefs, praising the Leeds band’s debut album ‘Employment’. The metal frontman singled out ‘Employment’, hailing it as “really, really good and super legit.”

Speaking of the impact the record had on him, he said: “The more I got into that album, the more it inspired me to write. I went on this whole slew of writing, man – just a ton of tunes. To this day, I listen to it and really get down with it. I’ve been threatening to do a cover of ‘Modern Way’ for a long time.”

During Drake’s gig at the Kia Forum as part of his ‘It’s All A Blur’ tour last night (August 13), Bad Bunny – real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio – was in attendance. The rapper took the opportunity to reveal that they have a song together that will be on his upcoming album.

“I want to tell y’all something ’cause y’all are L.A., and we love you. It’s been like six years since me and Benito did a song. So, we got a song coming for y’all on my album,” he told the audience.

The duo’s last collab was 2018’s ‘Mia’ from Benito’s debut album ‘X 100pre’. Upon the announcement at the show, fans quickly took to X (Twitter) to share their excitement. One user said: “The club is not ready for this” while another user commented: “Bad bunny n drake on another song together is gonna heal me.” A third user commented: “Drake x Bad bunny we’re not ready.”

Drake recently teased his forthcoming album ‘For All The Dogs’ and confirmed that the  LP would arrive “in like two weeks”.

Drake first teased the album back in January at his show at the Apollo in New York City. “I’ve thought about a bunch of things in life, but at this moment in time, none of those things are stopping making music for you, so I’ll be here for you for a little bit at least,” he said during the show.

In other news, the rapper surprised his Philadelphian fans on his ‘It’s All A Blur’ tour by walking out with hometown hero Meek Mill, after the pair feuded with each other in the past.

“It means the most to me that I can come back to this city and show the growth as two men, that we can come here tonight and we can represent for motherfucking Philadelphia together. That’s what this shit is about. So I appreciate Meek walking me to the stage tonight. Philly, I appreciate you embracing me with open arms one more time,” he said at the gig.

Elsewhere, Drake lent a verse on Travis Scott’s latest album ‘UTOPIA’. On ‘MELTDOWN’, he and Scott seemingly take jabs at Pharrell Williams, Timothée Chalamet and Pusha T. In the same week, the ‘God’s Plan’ rapper bought Tupac’s custom-made diamond ring for $1 million (£789,740).

In July, Drake announced his debut poetry book Titles Ruin Everything, A Stream of Consciousness.

Billie Eilish’s OVERHEATED climate action event is returning to London

Billie Eilish has announced an OVERHEATED event in London in order to help tackle the ongoing climate crisis.

According to a press release, “Following last year’s highly coveted, multi-day climate-focused event in London, OVERHEATED will return on Wednesday, August 30 to Flipper’s Roller Boogie Palace in West London from 10am to 5pm.”

Climate activists, musicians along with other leading voices will be in attendance for a day which will be “filled with discussion, community building and resources to help tackle the climate crisis, roller skating and delicious plant-based food” from Neat Burger. Eilish will also be making an appearance.

The event will be hosted by BBC’s Abbie McCarthy and will feature panels with special guests such as Earthrise CEO Alice Eady, fashion entrepreneur Samata Pattinson, and climate activists Dominique Palmer and Tori Tsui along with others.

Tickets for OVERHEATED will go on sale on August 16 at 10am BST. Visit here for tickets. Only 500 tickets will be going on sale to the public so for those who are not lucky enough to snag one, the event will be live-streamed globally on Eilish’s Official YouTube Channel in partnership with Mercury Studios.

Last year, Eilish hosted the first ever OVERHEATED event. It was a multi-day climate-focused event that took place at The O2 in London last June.

The event included a screening of the the Overheated documentary which featured appearances from Yungblud, Glastonbury‘s Emily Eavis and Girl In Red. In a four-star review of the documentary, NME shared: “It’s a project that recognises the magnitude and fragility of the moment – planetary heating looks set to soar above politically agreed targets – and holds a mirror up to our human response in all its see-sawing fear and encouragement. For those expecting a film about Billie Eilish’s climate activism, it’s not. She’s done something far more unselfish and effective, handing over her considerable spotlight to a collection of voices that, while fully acknowledging the perilous circumstance, combine as one to say: we can’t be defeated.”

In other news, the singer recently dedicated her performance of ‘Never Felt So Alone’ to late the Euphoria star, Angus Cloud while at Lollapalooza.

The track comes from her recent collaboration with Labrinth, and features prominently on the latest season of Euphoria. At her festival set, she told the crowd: “R.I.P. to Angus Cloud, everybody”, after finishing the rendition.

Olivia Rodrigo becomes a Chelsea FC fan after attending her first football match

Olivia Rodrigo has shared that she is officially a Chelsea FC fan after attending her first-ever football match.

The pop singer supported Chelsea at Stamford Bridge during the football club’s first Premier League game of the season against Liverpool on Sunday (August 13).

She confirmed it was the first football match she had ever seen and had “the best time”. Taking to her official Instagram account, the singer posted a video on her Insta stories of her running on on the pitch.

Rodrigo also took photos with Chelsea defender, Ben Chilwell, who then shared a photo of them chatting and presenting her with a blue number eight football shirt embossed with her last name.

Taking to their official social media accounts, the club shared a photo of Rodrigo and Chilwell smiling on X (Twitter) with a caption that read: “New Chelsea fan unlocked: Olivia Rodrigo”, and on Instagram with the caption: “Olivia Rodrigo is a Blue! #CheLiv.”

In other news, the singer recently shared a new single called ‘Bad Idea Right?’.

The song will appear on the pop singer’s second studio album ‘Guts’, which is due for release on September 8 via Geffen (pre-order/pre-save here).

Rodrigo recently revealed the full tracklist for the record which is the follow-up to the artist’s Grammy-winning debut ‘Sour’. It will feature the cuts ‘All American Bitch’, ‘Ballad Of A Homeschooled Girl’, ‘Love Is Embarrassing’, ‘Pretty Isn’t Pretty’ and more.

Earlier this summer, the singer explained that she had already come up with the title for her forthcoming second album before ‘Sour’ had even seen the light of day.

“I had it in my head. I’m like, ‘Four letters, all caps, just like ‘Sour’,” she recalled. “I love it. I just think it’s an interesting word.”

Rodrigo added: “People use it in so many interesting contexts, like spill your guts. Hate your guts… I think is a really interesting term. [It] means bravery, but it also means intuition, like listen to your gut. I just think it’s all of these things that coincidentally were things that I’ve really been thinking about in this chapter.”

Here’s Metallica’s ‘Kill ‘Em All’ played in the style of ZZ Top

A musician and content creator has performed the entirety of Metallica‘s debut studio album ‘Kill ‘Em All’ in the style of ZZ Top.

  • READ MORE: Does Rock ‘N’ Roll Kill Braincells?! – Metallica’s Kirk Hammett

Denis Pauna, a singer and guitarist from Croatia, performed and recorded every track from the American heavy metal band’s 1983 classic in the bluesy style of the Texas-formed Southern-rock band, and posted it online to his YouTube channel.

“Here’s the WHOLE album ‘Kill ‘Em All’ by Metallica as if ZZ Top wrote it. Even though a few days passed by, this video counts as a KEA 40th Anniversary!” Pauna wrote in the video description. ‘Kill ‘Em All’ turned 40 on July 25, 2023.

You can listen to the 40-minute reimagining of the ‘Kill ‘Em All’ below.

“As a fan of both Metallica and ZZ Top, this is incredible,” one YouTube comment read.

“This sounds way better than it has any right to,” another added, while a third shared: “I would love to sit at a bar counter, low light, drinking a good bourbon, or a beer, relaxing and listening to this whole set live.”

Other videos on his channel attempt to answer what ‘Barbie Girl’ would sound like as a “southern metal song” and “if Rammstein wrote Bon Jovi‘s ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’.”

Elsewhere, an AI generator recently came up with a cover version of Seal‘s ‘Kiss From A Rose’, covered by Metallica frontman James Hetfield.

It comes after a whole host of artificially generated cover versions have been shared online in recent months, such a The Beatles ‘covering’ The Beach Boys and a controversial ‘cover’ of Hole’s ‘Celebrity Skin’ by Kurt Cobain.

Back in June, Metallica released their new ‘Amsterdam Sessions’ live EP and shared the ‘If Darkness Had A Son’ performance video.

The four-track EP, recorded in April at Ready Set Studios in Amsterdam, consists of ’72 Seasons’ cuts ‘Lux Æterna’ and ‘If Darkness Had A Son’, alongside classics ‘Master Of Puppets’ and ‘Nothing Else Matters’.

In other news, Hetfield recently admitted that he called Kip Winger to apologise for dissing him in the band’s ‘Nothing Else Matters’ video, which sees Lars Ulrich use Winger’s face as a dartboard.

Sufjan Stevens announces new album ‘Javelin’ and shares first single

Sufjan Stevens has announced his new album ‘Javelin’ and shared lead single ‘So You Are Tired’ – listen to it below.

  • READ MORE: Sufjan Stevens – ‘Convocations’ review: 49-song ambient opus is moving, but hard work

‘Javelin’ is due out on October 6 via Asthmatic Kitty Records, and is available to pre-save/ pre-order here. The LP marks the artist’s first solo album since 2020’s ‘The Ascension‘, and his first back in “full singer-songwriter mode” since ‘Carrie & Lowell‘, according to a press release.

It also follows his April release ‘Reflections’, a studio recording of his score for the ballet by choreographer Justin Peck.

Lead single ‘So You Are Tired’ is a gentle piano number that gradually swells to introduce guitars, percussion and a choir of powerful vocals. “So you are tired of us / So rest your head,” Stevens sings.

Listen to it below.

The forthcoming 10-track album sees “the entire experience of Stevens’ 25-year career brought to bear in four-minute bursts of choral, orchestral, and electric wonder”, as per the release.

The musician worked with a close circle of collaborators on the new LP, including adrienne maree brown, Hannah Cohen, Pauline Delassus, Megan Lui, Nedelle Torrisi and Bryce Dessner. Stevens’ cover of Neil Young‘s ‘There’s A World’ also closes the album.

The release will also be accompanied by a 48-page book of art and essays created by Stevens.

The 10 short essays, which vary widely in tone and style “offer little glimpses into loves and losses that have shaped him, and, in turn, these songs”.

Find the tracklisting and album art below.

The ‘Javelin’ tracklist is:

1. ‘Goodbye Evergreen’
2. ‘A Running Start’
3. ‘Will Anybody Ever Love Me?’
4. ‘Everything That Rises’
5. ‘Genuflecting Ghost’
6. ‘My Red Little Fox’
7. ‘So You Are Tired’
8. ‘Javelin (To Have And To Hold)’
9. ‘Shit Talk’
10. ‘There’s A World’

Back in June, Stevens announced that he is set to share new music as part of a 20th anniversary reissue of his 2003 LP ‘Michigan’. Earlier this year, it was also announced that the follow-up, 2005’s ‘Illinois’, will be turned into a musical.

His string of recent announcements and new releases comes after he expressed his desire to “a break and step back” from music for a while in 2021.

In a four-star review of his May 2021 release ‘Convocations’, NME wrote: “‘Convocations’ is a mature work, but its length and intricate creation makes it difficult to get under its skin, the record’s wonderful honesty hidden behind layers that you wish could be peeled back.”
