Here Are Martin Garrix's Favorite Spots On the Island of Ibiza

Ever wondered what it’s like to see the clubbing capital of the world through the eyes of one of its biggest DJs?

Martin Garrix recently teamed up with the editors of Apple Maps’ “Guides” feature—packages of tourist information that allow users to organize locations and destinations on the platform—to spotlight his top places on the island of Ibiza. The Dutch dance music icon seems to have a soft spot for the radiant White Isle, opening up about his favorite view, seafood restaurant, hiking trail and more.

Fans who want to take in Ibiza’s breathtaking sunsets, Garrix says, should head to the mythical Es Vedrà, a small, uninhabited island that’s part of the Cala d’Hort nature reserve.

“Es Vedrà is a small island located near Ibiza that is considered to hold a special magnetic energy. I enjoy taking a boat ride to this unique and beautiful location. The lookout point is also amazing, where you can witness the most insane sunsets. It’s something you should experience at least once in your life. I’ve spent some of my most amazing evenings there with friends.”

When it comes to Garrix’s favorite place on Ibiza, he singled out the fabled Ushuaïa. Since first sneaking in over a decade ago at the age of 15, he’s been regularly tearing up the iconic venue for his high-flying summer residencies.

“My favorite place in Ibiza is definitely Ushuaïa [where I have my summer residency]. I love the setting, atmosphere, and overall setup,” Garrix said. “It’s a surreal place, and I’ve been going there for over 12 years. The first time I went, I snuck in to see Swedish House Mafia, and the year after that, I played a set myself. It will always be magical to play there with the sun going down, planes flying over, and people dancing.”

Record Store Day Unsigned contest relaunches to offer artists chance at own vinyl pressing

Record Store Day is relaunching its RSD Unsigned competition.

The contest, running in partnership with Breed Media, will result in one unsigned artist having their music pressed on a 500 record run using “Bio-Vinyl” which according to a press release is a “new more sustainable but acoustically identical vinyl compound”. The winner will also attend a mastering session at Abbey Road Studios.

To enter RSD Unsigned, artists must submit a two minute sample of original music to TikTok or YouTube using the #RSDUnsigned hashtag. The entry must be finalised here before October 16.

A panel of judges including Bastille frontman Dan Smith will decide the winner.

“This collaboration between Record Store Day and Breed Media is a testament to our commitment to supporting independent artists and recognising the important role they play in their communities,” said Alan Jordan of Reflex Records in Newcastle and the RSD Board.

“RSD Unsigned aims to celebrate the diversity and innovation in new music and shine a light on the role record shops all around the country play in supporting new and breaking talent.”

Previous winners have included Amy Fitz Doyley, Sister Cookie, Heavy Rapids and Barbudo.

Meanwhile, vinyl sales recently soared by 122 per cent thanks to Record Store Day 2023.

Overall, around 260 record stores participated in this year’s event with Blur, Pixies, U2,
London Grammar, Madonna, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Foals, Donna Summer and Björk all releasing vinyl as part of the event.

It comes after vinyl outsold the CD format for the first time in 35 years, in 2022.

How BOMBAYS is Amplifying the Soundwaves of South Asian Heritage in Electronic Music

Born and raised as a first-generation Indian kid, Nikhil Thakar, who produces electronic music as BOMBAYS, emerged from a world where life’s path often diverges into two distinct routes.

Confronted with the choice between conforming to the conventional norms of acquiring a business degree and entering the corporate world or embarking on a journey to actualize one’s passion, Thakar unflinchingly chose the latter. A graduate in business and on the cusp of GMAT preparation, the seismic shift to music beckoned him, akin to announcing a voyage to space.

He decisively packed his belongings, bid farewell to familiarity and journeyed to the sun-drenched heart of Los Angeles, where Icon Collective became his crucible for elevating his sonic craftsmanship.

c/o BOMBAYS

Deeply intertwined with his pursuit was the tenacious embrace of his cultural heritage. BOMBAYS navigated the contours of production while harboring an unwavering desire to mirror his roots and ancestry. It was in this exploration that he unearthed the poignant void, an industry bereft of the vibrancy and diversity encapsulated in his journey.

The dearth of representation for individuals of color—particularly the Brown community—stoked the flames of Thakar’s motivation. His vision expanded beyond his own journey, an aspiration to transcend into a beacon of inspiration, a testament to possibility for producers sharing his narrative across the globe.

The Harmonic Confluence: Bollywood’s Resonant Echoes

BOMBAYS has transformed his journey into an anthem of courage, an ode to culture and an unceasing symphony of creativity.

Inspired by the intricate symphony of 90s Bollywood records, BOMBAYS found his muse in the delicate balance of complexity and simplicity that lay within each composition. The echoes of this inspiration reverberate throughout his unique sonic tapestry, where every beat and melody resonates with both sensuality and energy, infusing his sound with an enigmatic allure that effortlessly commands the dance floor.

Empowerment Through Artistry: The SCORPEUR Initiative

Elevating his artistic prowess beyond melodies and rhythms, BOMBAYS launched the “SCORPEUR” merchandise line, a movement that extends far beyond music. With each purchase, a percentage of profits journeys back to India, embodying a heartfelt commitment to affect positive change and offer a helping hand to those in need.

A Vision Unveiled: Crafting the Future, One Note at a Time

BOMBAYS’ artistic odyssey is far from fleeting; it’s a symphonic crescendo that reverberates across continents. With grand aspirations that stretch beyond horizons, his focus remains fixated on the intricacies of each record. In this dance between creation and vision, he orchestrates an exquisite narrative, visualizing not only the rhythms that will pulse through a crowd but the emotions that will entwine with each note, painting an evocative canvas that transcends mere music.

As BOMBAYS sets sail on this musical voyage, he does so not only as an artist, but also as a harbinger of change, embodiment of artistic fusion and a relentless champion of diversity and empowerment. In each beat, note and endeavor, he breathes life into a kaleidoscope of inspirations and harmonies that resonate with unwavering passion.

There are not many individuals in the electronic music industry who represent the diaspora of what being Brown means. To be able to inculcate his cultural influences into his music, BOMBAYS is changing the game for the better. Cultural representation is more than sampling a sound from your favorite ethnic artist, it often is appreciating the talent that comes directly from those communities.

You can catch BOMBAYS at SoCal’s Nocturnal Wonderland festival on September 17th.

Following her stint in hospital, which saw her spend time in the ICU, Madonna said she felt “lucky to be alive”.

“Love from family and friends is the best Medicine,” she wrote on Instagram. “One month out of the hospital and I can reflect. As a mother you can really get caught up in the needs of your children and the seemingly endless giving. But when the chips were down my children really showed up for me. I saw a side to them I had never seen before.”

One slide in the post showed her holding a framed Polaroid of Keith Haring wearing a jacket with Michael Jackson‘s face painted on it, taken by Andy Warhol. “I sobbed when I opened this gift because I realized how lucky I am to be alive,” she wrote. “And how fortunate I am to have known these people and so many others who are also gone.”

Meanwhile, Madonna is strongly rumoured to be one of the female headliners booked to headline Glastonbury 2024. Glasto co-organiser Emily Eavis previously revealed that she has confirmed one female headliner and is “close” to confirming another, and that neither act have ever played Worthy Farm before.

Future Islands return with new single ‘Deep In The Night’

Future Islands have shared an emotional new single called ‘Deep In The Night’ – you can listen to it below.

The song marks the first material from the Baltimore band since their standalone track ‘King Of Sweden’, which came out last year. Another song, ‘Peach’, was released in 2021 following on from their sixth and latest studio album, ‘As Long As You Are’ (2020).

Today (August 15), Future Islands made their return with a moody, atmospheric ballad. It is not yet known whether ‘Deep In The Night’ will feature on a forthcoming full-length record from the quartet.

Deep in the night/ You know, I miss you more when I’m stuck inside/ This room without you, and you’re still asleep/ I’m like a prowling lion that’s seeking pride/ When the morning finds you,” sings frontman Samuel T Herring over glistening synths and a steady, processed drum beat.

The singer then declares his love in the chorus: “I belong to you/ I belong to you/ When you take my hand, I understand/ Where you end and that’s where I began.”

‘Deep In The Night’ is accompanied by an official black-and-white music video that sees Future Islands performing the romantic single in silhouette. You can watch the clip – directed and edited by Albert Birney – above.

The group – completed by Gerrit Welmers, William Cashion and Michael Lowry – will perform as part of the Wider Than Pictures concert series in Dublin on August 24. They’ll also appear at Connect Festival in Edinburgh and End of the Road Festival in Dorset.

Additionally, Future Islands are due to support Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds in Manchester next week, and will play their own headline shows in Middlesbrough, Cambridge, Norwich and Wolverhampton. You can buy any remaining tickets here.

In a four-star review of ‘As Long As You Are’, NME described the album as “maybe an unexpected handbrake turn for Future Islands”.

“It may not be as hit-laden as its predecessor,” it added, “but it’s a refreshing record in its own right and one that throws up plenty of existential quandaries.”

Jake Shears and Self Esteem join cast of ‘Cabaret’

Jake Shears and Self Esteem have joined the cast of the West End production of Cabaret – watch the official preview video below.

Soloist and Scissor Sisters vocalist Shears will join the ‘Prioritise Pleasure’ singer-songwriter (real name Rebecca Lucy Taylor) onstage at the Playhouse Theatre’s Kit Kat Club from September 25 to January 20.

The pair are stepping into the lead roles of Emcee and Sally Bowles, respectively. They’ll take over from current cast members Maude Apatow (Euphoria) and Mason Alexander Park (Quantum Leap).

In a statement, Taylor said: “I’ve never made a secret of my love of theatre and I couldn’t be more excited about getting to make my stage debut as one of the greatest leads of all time.

“I’ve joked for years that there is no need for a Self Esteem musical because Sally’s story covers most of the points. I am artistically and emotionally raring to take on this challenge.”

Directed by Rebecca Frecknall, the current incarnation of London’s Cabaret opened in 2021. An official description reads: “Winning a record-breaking seven Olivier Awards including Best Musical Revival, this intimate and electrifying new production of Cabaret is London’s hottest ticket. Welcome to the Kit Kat Club.

“One of the most successful musicals of all time, this new West End production features the songs ‘Wilkommen’, ‘Don’t Tell Mama’, ‘Mein Herr’, ‘Maybe This Time’, ‘Money’ and the title number ‘Cabaret’ – with Berlin’s famous Kit Kat Club brought to life through the transformation of London’s Playhouse Theatre.”

It adds: “This is Berlin. Relax. Loosen up. Be yourself.” Tickets are available to purchase here.

Shears has previously appeared in the likes of Kinky Boots on Broadway and in Los Angeles. Additionally, he penned the lyrics for the 2022 London musical Tammy Faye. Elton John wrote the music for the latter production.

Self Esteem, meanwhile, played a fairy in an Oxford pantomime performance of Jack And The Beanstalk in 2017/2018. The Sheffield artist later recalled the experience on social media.

Last year, she composed the music for Jodie Comer’s West End and Broadway play Prima Facie.

Jake Shears released his second solo album, ‘Last Man Dancing’, in June.

Corey Taylor sings ‘SpongeBob’ theme with SpongeBob voice actor

Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor has teamed up with SpongeBob SquarePants voice actor Tom Kenny for a special performance of the kids animation’s theme song.

While at the Huntington Comic and Toy Convention in West Virginia this past weekend, Taylor was invited onstage to perform the SpongeBob theme song with Kenny, who voices the titular character and sang the original theme for Nickelodeon’s hit children’s show.

“This is the most nervous I’ve ever been in my whole career,” Taylor said to the audience at the event’s outdoor stage. “How the hell did I get here, guys?”

Watch the performance below.

The collaboration has been a long time coming for Taylor, who has performed the song as a treat for fans at his solo shows dating back to 2011.

Earlier this year, Corey Taylor quipped during a live show that he was growing tired of performing the showtune: “I’ve written over a hundred songs and you motherfuckers are screaming ‘SpongeBob’ at a grown ass fucking man. What the hell is wrong with you?’” He then begrudgingly performed the song to raucous applause, flipping off the audience and laughing while doing so.

Taylor is set to release his second solo album ‘CMFT2’ on September 15 and will tour the UK and Europe in support of the record in November. You can find any remaining tickets for the tour here.

Speaking to NME for our In Conversation video franchise recently to promote the album, Taylor teased the release of Slipknot’s “lost” album, ‘Look Outside Your Window’. The band recorded the album in 2008 but, so far, only one track from the sessions has been released – ‘All Hope Is Gone’ bonus track ‘Til We Die’.

Elsewhere in the interview, he also spoke of his love of Kaiser Chiefs, praising the Leeds band’s debut album ‘Employment’. The metal frontman singled out ‘Employment’, hailing it as “really, really good and super legit.”

Speaking of the impact the record had on him, he said: “The more I got into that album, the more it inspired me to write. I went on this whole slew of writing, man – just a ton of tunes. To this day, I listen to it and really get down with it. I’ve been threatening to do a cover of ‘Modern Way’ for a long time.”
