Incubus to release re-recorded version of ‘Morning View’

Incubus are set to re-record their seminal 2001 album ‘Morning View’.

The new version of the record titled ‘Morning View XXIII’, will be released on October 6 via the band’s new label, Virgin Music.

They are also set to support its release with a show at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on the same day, where they will perform ‘Morning View’ in full. Support will come from Paris Jackson and Action Bronson – you can find tickets here.

“We are excited to partner up with Virgin to release Morning View XXIII, and we can’t wait to perform it live for the fans at The Hollywood Bowl,” Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd said in a statement. “Morning View XXIII will give our fans a fresh new take on the songs and we look forward to sharing it with everyone when it drops on Oct 6th!”

Incubus spoke to NME about ‘Morning View’ for its 20th anniversary back in 2021. Speaking on the initial decision to record the album in the house on Morning View Drive in Malibu, Boyd told NME that the band, who were used to recording in “windless padded rooms,” wanted to be free from distractions during the recording process.

“We made the decision to not make our next album in a traditional setting so we rented this big, empty house up in Malibu kind of away from everything,” said Boyd. “We were interested in seeing what would happen if we changed our environment dramatically and set up in a living room together and brought out all of our gear into this house, where it was as distraction free as you could possibly be in that moment.”

Besides providing a peaceful retreat, the house and its stunning surroundings also inspired some of the album’s content. “Being in that sort of antithetical recording studio where there’s these beautiful, picturesque cathedral-type windows from the floor to ceiling, like 25 feet high, was amazing,” said Boyd.

“We got to watch the day move by as we were in there all day recording, and then at night, we got to watch the moon go by, and we got to watch the palm trees blowing in the wind; we would open the door sometimes and let the sea air into the room. That stuff affects everything, especially when you’re in a creative process.”

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the band went back to the Malibu beach house where it was written and recorded for a livestream concert of the record performed in its entirety.

GRiZ Benefit Concert Raises $30,000 to Support Accessible Surfing for All

As the waves rolled in at the Carolina Beach Pier, so did the charitable contributions.

Ocean Cure, a nonprofit with a mission to facilitate accessible surfing for all, raised $30,000 over the weekend after partnering up with GRiZ to bring his “GRiZMAS In July” event shoreside. Based in Carolina Beach, the 501c3 non-profit organization is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with challenges and disabilities through surfing.

The Sunday concert was immediately preceded by the organization’s largest surf camp, “Life Rolls On.” In total, roughly 100 adaptive athletes attended while 500 volunteers helped the athletes access the beach in a wheelchair-friendly capacity and mount adaptive surfboards.

“All of our camps are offered free of charge to everybody,” Kevin Murphy, founder of Ocean Cure, told Port City Daily. “It’s the one thing we make sure of.” Murphy started Ocean Cure in 2009 and facilitates local events on behalf of the global “Life Rolls On” network.

Murphy, who started Ocean Cure in 2009 and facilitates local events on behalf of the global “Life Rolls On” network, says the organization requires $100,000 to operate annually. Its fundraising partnership with GRiZ marks one of two key events, while the balance comes from individual contributions. This year’s collaborative event was considered a major success, especially given the conduct of the community.

“There was a ton of hesitation from council members and the mayor and the police department, the fire department, lifeguards, obviously, knowing more than 3,000 people were coming down to the north end, bringing more traffic,” Murphy added. “But there’s been comments that they were just floored by how there weren’t any major problems.”

Murphy says the funds will be used to purchase essentials such as life jackets, adaptive surfboards and beach-accessible wheelchairs.

Sable Valley Continues Tradition With 4th Installment of Innovative Summer Compilation Series

The soundtrack for a trapped-out summer has arrived, thanks to Sable Valley.

The sun’s out and the RL Grime-helmed label imprint is throwing a slate of formidable producers the keys. The new Sable Valley Summer compilation is becoming tradition, and now in its fourth year, there’s more than ever to explore.

The effort surges to life with the breaks-inspired “BSLIR” from Bristol-based duo Disaffected. The high-energy offering continues with frequent doses of innovative sound design, like in G-Buck’s “Out Of Order,” which boasts an unusual dance cadence driven by hushed vocal chop patterns.

The EP continues to floor the gas with CAB and Virus Mafia’s menacing “KILLERSOUND” and more, but it also seeks to cover even more ground outside the trap wheelhouse. The record’s closer stands as one such example, with Keenan Mathias’ “Give Me More” leaving us on a sentimental note with a tremolo house-style framework.

Watch Sabrina Carpenter cover ABBA at Lollapalooza

Sabrina Carpenter has treated the crowd at this year’s Lollapalooza to a cover of ABBA‘s ‘Lay All Your Love On Me’.

Towards the middle of her set Friday (August 4), the pop singer paused for a quick chat with the crowd before starting her next song. She explained how her two cats are named Benny and Björn, after two members of one of her favourite music groups, ABBA.

She then jumped into the group’s 1980’s hit ‘Lay All Your Love On Me’. This is not the first time the singer has included a cover of a famous song in her setlist. Carpenter has previously sung Shania Twain’s ‘Man I Feel Like A Woman’, Gwen Stefani’s ‘The Sweet Escape’, Britney Spears‘ ‘Baby One More Time’ and more.

The singer spoke to NME last year about another one of her favourite pop stars. She shared her early love for Christina Aguilera. Ca“When I was 6 or 7, I saw a video of her singing ‘A Sunday Kind Of Love’,” Carpenter explained about the origin of her admiration for the singer.

“[Aguilera] was maybe 10 in the video, and I was just mesmerised by her confidence and the power in her voice. Ever since then, I’ve been a Stan – from day one!”

Carpenter will be joining Taylor Swift on her ‘Eras’ tour later this month. The singer will serve as opening support for the pop icon beginning on August 24 in Mexico. From there, she will open for dates in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Australia and Singapore. Carpenter’s first stop on the tour will take place August 24 in Mexico.

Earlier this year, the pop singer released her deluxe edition of 2022’s Emails I Can’t Send’ titled ‘Emails I Can’t Send Fwd’. “For those of you that found a little piece of yourselves in this album, think of these few new songs as my sincerest thank you to you,” she shared on Instagram.

Magnus Finds The Elusive Silver Lining In Melancholic Single, "Good Enough"

Magnus is finding strength through change with his new single, “Good Enough.”

The U.K. producer describes the trials and tribulations shaping the melancholic dance pop original as “bittersweet.” Taking to Instagram, Magnus candidly described the song as a framework for rebuking negativity and unlearning destructive cycles of overthinking while simultaneously learning to remaster one’s outlook.

The introspective lyrics see him diving deep to find the ever-elusive silver lining needed to spark a worthwhile journey to self-healing. Like a diamond under pressure, the track’s production blossoms into a danceable cadence of melodic plucks and churning house drums.

Despite the weighty subject matter of the lyrics, Magnus flexes his penchant for creating tonal contrast on the production side with engaging instrumentals that remain equally memorable. It’s a skill set that’s become something of a signature following on the success of “Lovesick,” among other recent efforts by the rising talent.

Magnus’ “Good Enough” is out now by way of Thrive Music. Take a listen below.

Foals tease new music at Lollapalooza 2023

Foals have teased new music as well as their plans for their upcoming Reading & Leeds set while at Lollapalooza 2023.

While speaking to NME backstage at this year’s edition of Chicago’s famous music festival, Foals shared that they were working on some new music. Frontman Yannis Philippakis said: “We’ve got a song that is unfinished that we call ‘Tranquillity’, it’s not going to be called that in the future but we were all listening to it and vibing with it the other day.”

He continued: “It was something we were writing and recording around the time of ‘Life Is Yours’ and it didn’t quite fit but it’s really exciting and is kind of the coolest thing we’ve ever written so we might try to finish that at some point.”

The band also shared what they have coming up for their headlining set at Reading & Leeds later this month.

“We’re getting chased for the setlist which feels a bit early since it’s a few weeks away,” said Philippakis. Drummer Jack Bevan added: “We’ll be bringing a big production and there will be a few sprinkles on top and Walter [Gervers, bassist] has some big secret stuff planned, he hasn’t even told us yet so we are looking forward to that.”

In other news, Foals are set to play MEO Kalorama 2023 at the end of this month. The Prodigy, Lil Silva, Arcade Fire, Florence + The Machine, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Aphex Twin and more are also set to play the festival.

The band recently welcomed back Gervers following his departure from the group in 2017. “Walter is back and better than ever. Rejoining for all the coming shows and into the future. Get ready, the boys are back in business,” shared Philippakis on an Instagram post of his fellow Foals members in the pub with Gervers.

Watch The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas imitate Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner

Footage has emerged of The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas doing an impersonation of Alex Turner during a recent show in Singapore.

As the band were gearing up to perform their 2005 hit ‘Juicebox’ at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre on Thursday (August 3), Casablancas thanked the crowd for coming and told them: “Hope you all have a good time” before he then said in a very similar manner to the Arctic Monkeys frontman: “Hope you didn’t have to travel too far.”

“That sounded like very modern Arctic Monkeys,” he added. You can view the clip below.

Turner has been very open and vocal about his love of The Strokes over the years, with the band covering ‘Is This It’ live in 2018 – as well as honouring them on ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’ track ‘Star Treatment’ with the lyric: “I just wanted to be one of The Strokes, now look at the mess you’ve made me make.”

At the time, Turner admitted the arrival of The Strokes in 2001 changed his life.

“The arrival of The Strokes changed what music I was listening to, what shoes I was wearing. I grew my hair out and borrowed my mum’s blazer. I was a huge fan,” he added.

“That line [on ‘Star Treatment’] seemed to encapsulate this idea that a period of time went by in a flash. It was something to hold a place, which I’d return to once I knew what this album was going to be about. By the time I came back to change it, it seemed to be exactly where it ought to be.”

Later, Casablancas shared a photo of himself recreating the cover art of the Sheffield band’s 2006 debut album, ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’. “lolll – i always wanted to be in the Arctic Monkeys,” the singer captioned his post.

Meanwhile, Blur‘s Damon Albarn also recently shared his love for Turner, saying he sings “a lot like him” on the band’s new album ‘The Ballad Of Darren’.

Asked what he thinks of the frontman, Albarn responded: “I think he’s great, I sing a lot like him on the new album.

“You know our producer James Ford? He also worked with the Arctic Monkeys, I mentioned that to him. But what could I have against that? I love Alex’s voice. I just prefer to sing in a lower register now.”

The Strokes, whose latest album ‘The New Abnormal’ came out in 2020, are due to headline All Points East 2023 in London on August 25. You can buy any remaining tickets here.
