Joel Dommett, Russell Kane and Fern Brady lead Alternative Stage line-up


Reading & Leeds festivals have announced the comedy line-up for the Alternative Stage at the 2023 festivals – see the full list below.

The twin festivals return to Richfield Avenue and Bramham Park from August 25-27, with Foals, Billie Eilish, The Killers, Sam Fender and Imagine Dragons all set to headline.

The 1975 were also recently announced as last-minute headliners, replacing Lewis Capaldi who is taking a break from all live performances for the time being following his Glastonbury set to focus on his mental and physical health.

Playing the Alternative Stage at Reading & Leeds next month are the likes of Joel Dommett, Russell Kane, Fern Brady, Chris Washington, Daliso Chaponda, Fern Brady, Laura Lexx, Mark Oliver, Jack Skipper, Sara Schaefer and Thanyia Moore.

Other acts for this year’s festival include Wet Leg, Slowthai, Bicep, Becky Hill, Steve Lacy, Central Cee, MUNA, The Snuts, Tion Wayne and more.

While performing at TRNSMT festival this month (July 9), The 1975 frontman Matty Healy revealed mid-set that not only will the band be taking over Capaldi’s slot at the dual event, but they will also be performing their 2013 self-titled debut album in its entirety to mark its 10th anniversary.

Healy said onstage: “So, on Saturday at Reading and Sunday at Leeds in celebration of 10 years of our debut album, The 1975 will be playing that album in full in support of our good friend Lewis Capaldi. If you’ve got tickets, good for you. If you haven’t, go and get them. We’ll see you there.”

The 1975 notably headlined last year’s iconic twin-site festival alongside Arctic Monkeys, Megan Thee Stallion, Dave, Bring Me The Horizon and Halsey.

Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike Announce Debut Album, Release Single With David Guetta, Akon and Afro Bros

Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike have revealed their long-awaited debut album, Rewind + Repeat, which will release on their very own Smash The House imprint.

Alongside the powerhouse duo’s announcement, they dropped the first single off the album, “She Knows.” The track is a colossal collaboration with Akon, David Guetta and Afro Bros which pulls heavy inspiration from the trance, techno and rave music of the ’90s.

All artists on this collaboration are trailblazers in their own right. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike played a major role in the big room house boom of the 2010s and became the de facto faces of Tomorrowland, the world’s largest electronic music festival. Guetta was an early champion of the intersection of EDM and pop while Akon dominated hip-hop and R&B with global hits like “Smack That,” “I Wanna Love You” and “Sexy Bitch,” the lattermost of which is a collaboration between the two. They also teamed up for “Play Hard,” which appeared on Guetta’s Nothing But The Beat 2.0 album over a decade ago.

“It’s so great to team up with David again for this summer anthem—we’re also huge Akon fans, so to bring those two back together on our collaboration is next level for us,” Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike said in a press release shared with EDM.com. “The sample from The Sunclub’s ‘Fiesta’ is part of our musical history and journey and sets the tone of what we want to achieve with our upcoming album: going back to our roots!”

Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike have not revealed the release date of Rewind + Repeat at the time of writing. We’re told the majority of the tracks on Rewind + Repeat will be complemented by a short mini-documentary that will bring fans behind the scenes to hear the stories of how each was made.

Of the new EP, ODESZA’s Harrison Mills & Clayton Knight shared that “We discovered Emile/Yellow House on SoundCloud and were immediately drawn to his voice and delivery. After finding success working on a few demos we flew him over from South Africa to work with us in our Seattle studio. From the jump, the music had that unmistakable energy of having discovered something special. We found ourselves drawn to a unique blend of electronic production and Emile’s incredible ability to create nostalgic melodies and storytelling lyrics. From there we went about creating a number of tracks and exploring various different combinations of the two worlds.”

Fans share clip of Lady Gaga saying “Tony Bennett saved my life”


Footage has resurfaced of Lady Gaga saying that “Tony Bennett saved [her] life” in the wake of the latter’s death.

The veteran crooner died in New York City today (Friday, July 21) at the age of 96. A cause of death has not yet been disclosed, but Bennett had been living with Alzheimer’s disease since 2016.

His final studio recording was 2021’s ‘Love For Sale’, a collaborative album with Gaga. The pair had previously joined forces on a 2014 duet LP called ‘Cheek To Cheek’. In 2011, Bennett recorded a version of ‘The Lady Is A Tramp’ with Gaga for his ‘Duets II’ collection.

During an interview with CBS nine years ago, Gaga credited Bennett with “saving” her following a period of personal and professional difficulty.

“You know, it’s one thing to put a train on the tracks,” she explained. “But it’s another thing to keep the train on the tracks. You just can’t let a train out on the tracks and just run out. It’ll… I crashed.”

Gaga went on to say at the time that she “didn’t even want to make music anymore” at one point in 2013.

“I just want to be happy, and I can’t tell you how happy singing this music makes me,” the pop star added tearfully, referring to ‘Cheek To Cheek’.

“I got tired of fighting to keep [the music] my way,” she explained. “And Tony… that’s one of the first things he said to me. He said, ‘Don’t you ever, ever, ever, ever, again or in the future let anybody take down the quality or the intelligence of what you do’.”

Gaga said: “I was a jazz singer since I was a little girl, and nobody had really picked up on it. So when Tony asked [to collaborate], I got really excited.”

In a separate 2014 interview with Parade, Gaga commented: “I tell Tony every day that he saved my life.

“I’m not going to say any names, but people get irrational when it comes to ­money – with how they treat you, with what they expect from you. But if you help an artist, it doesn’t give you the right, once the artist is big, to take advantage of them…I was so sad. I couldn’t sleep. I felt dead.”

She continued: “And then I spent a lot of time with Tony. He wanted nothing but my friendship and my voice.”

Remembering the start of the ‘Cheek To Cheek’ project, Gaga said: “When I came into this with Tony, he didn’t say, ‘You’ve got to take off all the crazy outfits and just sing’. He said, ‘Be yourself’.”

Bennett and Gaga played two special shows at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City in 2021 shortly before the former announced his retirement. The performances were captured for a TV special titled One Last Time, which later earned a nomination at the Emmys in the Outstanding Variety Special category.

Additionally, Bennett and Gaga delivered a stripped-back intimate set for MTV Unplugged.

Other artists to have collaborated with Bennett include Paul McCartney, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, U2 frontman Bono, Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder and George Michael.

The legendary musician first found fame with his debut album ‘Matthew And Son’ when he was just 18 in 1967, before releasing the likes of ‘First Cut Is The Deepest’, ‘Father And Son’, ‘Morning Has Broken’, ‘Peace Train’ and ‘Wild World’. He has had a career that has spanned over 50 years, with his latest album being 2023’s ‘King Of A Land’.

Marking his 75th birthday today, the icon told his fans: “Thanks to the One who gave us life after our lifeless non-existence – to You is the Journeying.”

“It’s not an exaggeration to say that if it wasn’t for Cat Stevens (as most of us knew his name as that) I would probably never have performed. When my first album came out, it was presented to me that Cat Stevens had asked me to open for him at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. I balked and I put up barriers, but the lure of being a part of that week was too attractive.”

“The first time I heard his voice which was on the radio earlier that year (1971) I had such an unusual reaction to it. It was brand new in every way except for one: it stirred my soul (up from the many) but like very few voices ever had. I had to hear it in person. Skip to the Troubadour and during the two days of rehearsal there, I got to hear him practice and it brought me out of the overly excited nervous system that may have usurped me, made me more self-preoccupied than would have been helpful.”

“He did transport me and grip me. The songs coming from that warm, dark, fierce place. The child like quality which he had in addition to the powerful adult male sexiness was so interesting, so charismatic. He had that quality that you couldn’t name. You had to go searching.”

Stevens performed in the Legends slot on the Pyramid Stage at this years edition of Glastonbury. Though he told NME that he was “petrified”, beforehand – adding “I haven’t done a big gig like that in a long time” and describing the honour as a “bucket list moment”.

Fans then praised his set as a “mesmerising” and “magical” set.

Speaking to NME earlier this year about his new LP ‘King Of A Land’, Stevens shared: “I didn’t have a plan for what this album was going to be and, in a way, I’ve been recording it for 12 years. I started recording it in Berlin in 2011, but I wasn’t happy with the tracks I laid down there.

He continued: “Over the years, I’ve gradually been perfecting them. I live in Dubai, where I’ve been adding details in my studio. So it’s taken a long time, but it’s benefitted from that. I wasn’t going to let go until it’s ready and I’m very, very pleased with the results. It’s probably one of my best albums.”
