While the United States now enters month number eight of unsuccessful COVID-19 control, Taiwan on the other hand falls on the polar end of the spectrum, having efficiently contained the spread of the virus dating back to early spring. With official reports citing zero new daily domestic cases in the country since April, Ultra Taiwan was permitted to make a glorious return to its Taipei venue on November 14 for the first Ultra iteration since the Miami edition ignited the festival cancellation fallout in March. As the first major dance music event since the pandemic’s onset, Ultra Taiwan employed a handful of fan-favorite headliners including Alesso, Kayzo, SLANDER, and Vini Vici. For those who were unable to be there in Taiwan in person or missed the livestream on November 14, all four sets are now (partially) available to rewatch.
To describe the nearly six-hour UMFTV stream as “worthwhile” would be a complete disservice to the historic one-day event. Each of Ultra Taiwan’s performers delivered in their own respective manners, from Kayzo’s ID-riddled opening slot to Vini Vici’s hour-long psytrance marathon to SLANDER’s 90-minute round of bass, including an impending Au5 collaboration, “Anywhere.” Last but surely not least was Alesso’s Ultra Taiwan grand finale, where the Swede was behind the most talked about performance of the evening. Although the stream was cut short (the remainder can be viewed here), Alesso put forth one of his tenure’s single greatest performances, testing out three IDs from what may very well be his second PROGRESSO mixtape edition while introducing a slew of never-before-heard mashups between some of his most ageless releases.
