It’s not even four days into 2023 and Skrillex is already writing a potential case to eventually follow Fred again.. as Dancing Astronaut‘s 2023 Artist of the Year. Talks of a Recess successor have been in the air for as long as anyone can remember—eight years to be exact—and right as the pandemic hit, he’d begun hinting that multiple long-form projects were in the works. And when he’d suddenly pulled out of Sunset Music Festival and Movement Detroit over Memorial Day Weekend in 2022, he officially put it in writing that the reasoning behind those cancellations was that so he could finish his “albums.”
On January 1, the OWSLA boss seemed to set the wheels in motion for his long-awaited sophomore effort—just hours after a surprise back-to-back with ISOxo—wiping his entire Instagram feed, updating his profile photo, and sharing a multi-track video with the caption “QFF/DGTC 2023″—with one of the titles potentially being Don’t Get Too Close—which more than likely hints at the album’s plural form. One of the IDs included in that teaser—out of potentially 18 total tracks—was none other than “Rumble.” Arguably the single most sought-after ID in dance music since Fred again..’s iconic Boiler Room stream from August of 2022, “Rumble” was safely assumed to be a Skrillex-led release after remaining absent from the Actual Life 3 tracklist. And the Flowdan-backed single has now finally taken itself off unreleased board to open both Skrillex’s possible double album and the newest calendar.
The excitement for “Rumble” was palpable from the moment Fred again.. introduced it to a lively room in London, and just over five months to the day later, that feeling stills prevails. “Rumble” marks the first time that Skrillex and Fred again.. have officially matched up on the title front, with Flowdan’s outright electric vocal lighting the way over the near three-minute original. And “Rumble” won’t be the sole Skrillex appearance this week, with him announcing “Way Back Home” with Pink Pantheress and Trippie Redd will be out January 5. While there still remains a laundry list of question marks surrounding Skrillex’s project plans moving forward in the new year, take a moment to enjoy “Rumble” in its final streaming form below.
