Founding member of the UK label collective LuckyMe, Hudson Mohawke makes his return to the label with a new track titled “What U Need.” The single is part of LuckyMe’s yearly advent calendar, an annual tradition that began in 2011.
“What U Need” samples Powerhouse’s 1999 hit “What You Need” featuring Duane Harden. The single, which reached No. 1 on the US Dance charts upon its release at the tailend of the ’90s, receives a stellar revamp from Mohawke, who flips the funky house tune into a breathtaking original filled with pulsating uptempo rhythms and uniquely layered drum patterns. “What U Need” seamlessly clashes modern Jersey club bounce with old-school soul house grooves. Mohawke shared some background on his modern remake and the compilation LP, stating,
“2020 has been a lot of things, but at LuckyMe, it hasn’t been devoid of hope. While reckoning with the global health crisis and the renewed drive for racial justice, we’ve been forced to ask some valuable questions about what this project is.
Paradoxically, our family (the roster of musicians and the team supporting them) has seen one of its best years. It has been challenging, but we’ve been grateful for the significant projects which kept us focused, hustling to create when we could have easily been spiraling on our phones. 2020 gave us the time to listen too, and we’ll see the benefit of that in 2021 with a whole clique of new signings to work with. Our current roster continues to improve as they push into new ground. Without wanting to diminish the experience of the last year, we feel positive about the future. For this year’s Advent, we asked the crew to consider the theme of ‘utopia’ and what it means to leave 2020 behind. Once the smoke settles, there will be new growth. What does that sound like?
Our advent showcase has served as a charity drive for many years. We’ve been touched by the generosity of supporters. Our record deals mean we split our profit equally with the artists. If you donate here, we’ll pay them their share as normal. The label’s share, though, will go entirely to The Extinction Rebellion Global Relief Fund. There are so many worthy causes out there. We felt climate resonated with the theme: looking ahead at what our world ought to be.”
LuckyMe’s advent calendar features artists such as Baauer, A.G. Cook, S-Type, Lunice, and more, and is available via Bandcamp, where fans pay any price for any format of their choosing and will receive a link for the full album on December 18. The label’s share of profit goes entirely to The Extinction Rebellion Global Relief Fund.
