Thurston Moore releases surprise ambient album ‘screen time’

Thurston Moore has released a surprise new album entitled ‘screen time’, which consists of 10 abstract and ambient instrumental pieces.

The musician shared the record without fanfare today (February 5), which is available to stream and download exclusively via Bandcamp. You can take a listen below.

It comes just five months after Moore’s last studio album, ‘By The Fire’, which featured contributions from Moore’s former Sonic Youth bandmate Steve Shelley and My Bloody Valentine’s Debbie Googe.

In a four-star review, NME said of ‘By The Fire’: “Moore elegantly channels his sense of poise and calm in a word going to shit, easily proving why he remains a hero in the world of alt rock.”

Speaking to NME last October, Moore discussed a forthcoming book he’s been writing about his early days as a musician in New York City and the origins of Sonic Youth.

“I wanted to write about being in the milieu of the CBGBs explosion, and essay what was happening in the flurry of those years – especially between ‘77 and ‘79 – when this incredible seismic shift happened in underground culture,” he said.

“I’ve been focussing on putting this manuscript together that I’ll hopefully publish in a year’s time. I’m calling it Sonic Life – for want of a better title!”

In the run-up to the US election last year, meanwhile, Moore was one of a number of musicians who appeared on the compilation ‘Good Music to Avert the Collapse of American Democracy’, released by US voters’ rights organisation Fair Fight in an effort to combat voter suppression.

Seven Lions Transforms Some Of His Biggest Hits For New Trance EP

The Seven Lions: 1999 EP is melodic dance veteran Seven Lions’ first official full foray into trance, seeing him remix some of the biggest hits in his catalog. Spread across four tracks, the EP includes updated 2021 flips of “Worlds Apart,” one of his breakout major label tracks, the classic festival singalong anthem “Rush Over Me,” a Seven Lions classic 2012 “Days To Come” and his trance collab on Anjunabeats with Jason Ross, “Higher Love.”

Seven Lions is no stranger to the trance world, having collaborated with acts like Above & Beyond and Jason Ross, headlining festivals like Dreamstate SoCal and events including ABGT 250 at the Gorge, and leading the scene in bridging the sonic gap between the worlds of trance and dubstep. So to see him creating a full trance EP is not as jarring as one might think.

All of the songs retain their core melodies and vibes, now with newly added trance motifs that breathe new life into them.

The Weeknd warns fans not to expect any special guests at his Super Bowl LV halftime show – Dancing Astronaut The Weeknd warns fans not to expect any special guests at his Super Bowl LV halftime show

Super Bowl LV viewers shouldn’t expect any special guests at the 2021 Pepsi halftime show, The Weeknd told NFL Network in a recent interview. In the time since the After Hours album maker’s confirmation as the halftime performer in the fall of 2020, many have speculated that additional artists—namely two-helmet sporting electronic DJs—would grace the stage alongside the seasoned crooner.

Conjectures that Daft Punk could join The Weeknd at the halftime show swelled to an all-time high when fans pointed out that the tracklist for the vocalist’s second greatest hits album, The Highlights, could easily double as a setlist for his Super Bowl booking. The Highlights, slated to release on February 5 in anticipation of the halftime show, notably includes The Weeknd’s two Daft Punk features, “I Feel It Coming” and “Starboy.”

However, the Canadian artist debunked this fan-fueled theory in his NFL Network interview, stating,

“I’ve been reading a lot of rumors. There wasn’t any room to fit it in the narrative and the story I was telling in the performance. So, there’s no special guests, no.”

Special guests have been a customary part of the halftime performance in Super Bowl history, but The Weeknd performing alone would not be an entirely new approach for the show. In recent years, artists ranging from Travis Scott to Beyoncé to Mark Ronson and Bad Bunny have invited guests to share the stage; however, Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake elected to perform alone during the 2017 and 2018 halftime shows, respectively.

Although special guests might be an unlikely part of The Weeknd’s performance, this does not diminish what he’s got in store for fans. His manager Wassim “Sal” Slaiby recently confirmed that The Weeknd fronted $7 million of his own money to “make this halftime show be what he envisioned.” What that entails? We’ll all just have to wait and see.

Jarod Glawe Drops New Original Track ‘Tonight’ ft. Emma Remelle

One of dance music’s newest breakout artists, U.S. based Producer/DJ Jarod Glawe returns delivering his newest original single titled, ‘Tonight’ featuring vocalist Emma Remelle. ‘Tonight’ marks Jarod Glawe’s first release of 2021 via Tell Me Something records.

‘Tonight’ is an uplifting electro gem jammed pack with feel-good melodies and tantalizing vocals. From the atmospheric introduction, the upbeat build, and the energizing drop, ‘Tonight’ is an enticing vocal club track made to be heard on the dance floor. Emma Remelle’s  soaring emotive and catchy lyrics complement and tie the groovy track perfectly together. It is an enticing vocal club track made to be heard on the dance floors!  ‘Tonight’  showcases Jarod Glawe’s top notch production skills and the new direction he is transitioning into.  This is what Jarod had to say about “Tonight”:

“Tonight” has been one of my favorite collaborations to date. There was something extra special about this track to me. I had the majority of the instrumental production actually done before I showed it to Emma, and then she wrote on top of it. Emma is such a talented vocalist, so I always know that regardless of what I send her, I am going to get a powerful and emotional vocal performance every time. Personally, this track represents a change for me in my career as a producer/DJ as it is a major turn in my sound and transition from making more pop/future-bass music to more traditional four to the floor records. As an artist, taking a risk and transitioning/further discovering your sound is necessary to reaching your full potential. When I listen to the track, the overall vibe, emotion, production choices, etc. made me realize this sound best represents who I am, and what I want the listener to feel.”

 About Jarod Glawe:

While new to the scene, Jarod Glawe is stepping out with what is clearly a polished and deliberate sound. A superb wordsmith from beat one, bar one, Glawe’s slick production and clear intent to wow his listening audience are evident in his upcoming tracks. Though having just turned 23, Glawe has already started to leave a lasting impact in the music scene- with remixes from artists like Mokita, Thomas Gold, AMPM , as well as engineering for famous hometown rappers, including Twista.

New cover of Viola Beach’s ‘Swings And Waterslides’ to mark fifth anniversary of the band’s death

A new cover of Viola Beach‘s track ‘Swings And Waterslides’ has been recorded by a collective of Warrington musicians to mark five years since the band’s death.

Rising indie four-piece Viola Beach and their manager Craig Tarry were killed in a car accident on February 13, 2016 while travelling through Sweden.

To mark the fifth anniversary of the tragic event, a number of artists from their home town have come together for a new version of their debut single.

Billed as Warrington Music, the new rendition will be released next Friday (February 12) with proceeds going to charities chosen by the families of Viola Beach. You can hear the original below.

The line-up was brought together by Lee Harman, the editor of the local Warrington music publication [WAM] Magazine, with support from the band’s former sound engineer Cal Bate. The track features members of the bands The A.V Club, Sienne, Uno Mas, Crawlers, Aligners, Filthy Tricks and The Zangwills.

“Viola Beach left their own legacy despite their short time together,” Harman said. “They were the first of a new wave of bands who were proud to be from Warrington, and all the artists involved are honoured to be involved.

“We should have seen Viola Beach headlining the biggest festivals five years on but despite the pain and sadness getting easier every year, they put Warrington on the map, and we want to show they’re still an important part of the town’s culture.

“Kris [Leonard], Jack [Dakin], Tom [Lowe] and River [Reeves] have such an important part to play in keeping the Warrington Music [WAM] website active as I had all but stepped away from the blog but their tragic passing galvanised the towns scene and myself. I felt it was important to cover as much as I could about everything that was happening in the days and weeks after their tragic accident.”

Viola Beach’s death prompted tributes from across British music. The Coral and Courteeners‘ Liam Fray paid tribute to them at a special show in Warrington, and Coldplay covered their song ‘Boys That Sing’ during their Glastonbury Festival headline slot.

Their debut album was released posthumously in June 2016 and reached number one following a campaign by the likes of Liam Gallagher and The Stone Roses.

Rebel ACA and The French Monkey Wrench Team Up With Reggae Vocalists to ‘Dance Without Fear’

If there’s one thing we know about the indie pop/hip hop duo known as Rebel ACA and The French Monkey Wrench (French) from their interview with Your EDM back in 2018 is they’re nothing if not diverse. Flipping from hip hop to electronica, pop to indie rock effortlessly and with no small amount of cheek, since we last spoke to them, the UK duo had recently teamed up with legendary reggae artist Spragga Benz on his Billboard #1 album, Chiliagon. Rebel ACA’s Damon Albarn-esgue rap verses featured on the single “Move to the Music” and it seems since then, Rebel and the French have developed a taste for reggae and dancehall.

Somewhere along the road to reggae, Rebel ACA and French met two more vocalists, Danny Sprang and iSTAND, leading them to try their own hand at reggae and dancehall production. The result so far has been two tracks in 2020: “Modulation,” released on Buttercuts Records in October and most recently, the pop reggae dance track “Dance Without Fear,” released in late December.

Danny Sprang is well-known in the reggae community in the UK in his own right, having recently charted at number one on a London reggae chart. There’s less information about iSTAND but his deeper, more traditional patois vocal contribution is a great compliment to Sprang’s modern dancehall/pop-style vocals and the production from Rebel ACA and French.

In terms of style, “Modulation” has Rebel ACA and French’s Gorillaz-esque knack for giving a basic, soulful beat that works as a platform for all three vocalists. Ostensibly it’s sort of a reggae/hip hop meld but it’s well-done enough that it supports the funk and reggae instrumentals, Rebel ACA’s more stripped down rap and the more ornamented ragga styles of Sprang and iSTAND. It’s a chill yet emotive track that gives all the vocalists and musicians a place to play.

“Dance Without Fear” is quite different from “Modulation.” A light, uplifting dancehall/house anthem with lots of island rhythm over top of the base track. The funk is present here as well and it drives the track forward as iSTAND and Sprang work the vocals. Intended to be a message of New Year’s hope after 2020, the lyrics remind listeners that it won’t always be like this and no matter what’s going on in the world, we can still always “dance without fear”.

It’s fun to see Rebel ACA and The French Monkey Wrench adding the reggae and funk feather to their cap. It seems this duo can adapt to any style really, “Modulation” and “Dance Without Fear” seem to really resonate with their fun, uplifting and cheeky ethos. Here’s hoping that they will continue to work with Danny Sprang and iSTAND, because that is clearly a match that’s working.

“Modulation” and “Dance Without Fear” are out not on Buttercuts Records and can be streamed on Spotify. “Dance Without Fear” can also be found in multiple other platforms by clicking here. Check out other artists and the YouTube streams of these tracks on Buttercuts Records’ YouTube channel.

Seven Lions’ ‘1999 EP’ is a one-way ticket back in time – Dancing Astronaut Seven Lions’ ‘1999 EP’ is a one-way ticket back in time

While most have been trying to forget 2020, Seven Lions has been casting backward glances at the year 1999 in an effort to evoke the classic trance sound of a time 22 years in the rearview on some of his time-honored hits. The time machine whirred into gear with the EP’s debut single, a ‘1999’ conversion of the Ophelia Records governor’s October 2016 matchup with Illenium, Said the Sky, and Haliene, “Rush Over Me.” The concept-driven remake sent waves through the electronic circuit following its January 22 drop date, leaving listeners lusting for more Seven Lions material. Fortunately, they didn’t have to wait long.

A triplet consisting of “Worlds Apart” (2014), “Days To Come” (2012), and “Higher Love”(2017) completes the 1999 EP package, affording fans a unique opportunity to relive some of the songs that have shaped their electronic music fandom—with a twist. Seven Lions reflected on his motives to reconfigure four of his catalog staples, stating,

“2020 was a strange and honestly really demotivating year for me. I was having a hard time feeling inspired and creative in the studio so I decided to just do some musical therapy and make old-school trance remixes of some of my older tracks. I had a great time making these songs. They have a nostalgic vibe for me and it made me remember how much I love the process of making music, especially with zero expectations.”

It’s hard to imagine that the 1999 EP won’t also serve as “musical therapy” for listeners, and, arriving courtesy of Ophelia, it’s now available in full below.
