Rezz Shares Teaser of Forthcoming Remix For Grimes x i_o, “Violence”

We’re still in the midst of mourning for i_o, gone far, far too soon. Likely in dedication, one of his closest contemporaries, Rezz, has remixed his collaboration with Grimes, “Violence.”

The new remix was first teased by Rezz yesterday who simply told her followers she’d remixed it. Today, we get our first preview of the tune, a minimalist reinterpretation that blends i_o’s style of techno with Rezz’s deep and malevolent version of midtempo bass.

Check it out below and come back January 1 to hear the full track!

U.S. vinyl sales hit new record high twice in a month – Dancing Astronaut

As live music takes a back seat and U.S. citizens spend copious amounts of time indoors, the numbers show music devotees are indeed indulging in their favorite records this holiday season. Reaching a record-breaking high for the second time this December alone, vinyl record sales are flying off the shelves.

According to Nielsen Music/MRC Data, U.S. record patrons purchased 1.445 million vinyl records in just this one week alone, from December 11 to December 17, becoming the largest number of vinyl sales since the start of music sales tracking in 1991.

The record broke the previous high of 1.253 million vinyl sales during the week of November 27 to December 3 of this year, attributed largely to Black Friday. Sales also charted more than 1 million in the first two weeks of December, a number that hasn’t been reached since December 2019. Given this data, it certainly seems like vinyls are drifting further away from the days of novelty and ornamental home decor and into a more preferred and functional means of listening.

European tours put “at risk” by Brexit deal, warns UK Music boss

European tours will be put “at risk” by the new Brexit trade deal, the chief executive of UK Music has warned.

The government agreed on a deal with the EU on Christmas Eve ahead of the end of the Brexit transition period on January 1, 2021.

While workers from some industries will be able to travel to the EU on business without a visa, musicians are not included in the list of exemptions.

Bands and industry figures have warned that extra visa costs could make touring the continent financially unviable. Music manager Ellie Giles tweeted a thread last week (December 26) setting out a band of six people’s costs for a four-day tour, noting that if they needed to get visas for three countries on the tour, they would be set back £1800.

Her calculations saw the group only having £500 coming in after tax and the exchange rate were factored in, while their costs would be around £3,500. “Yes, it wasn’t viable before, it was tough but now it’s made it TWICE as bad,” she wrote.

UK Music boss Jamie Njoku-Goodwin, meanwhile, said the “additional costs and bureaucracy could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back”.

“There is a real risk that British musicians will not be able to bear the cost of extra bureaucracy and delays which would put some tours at risk,” he said, the Independent reports.

Artists from the EU will also face difficulties from January 1 should they want to perform in the UK. Freedom of movement will end as the UK fully leaves the EU and will mean bands will need a visa as well as provide proof of savings and a certificate of sponsorship from event organisers.

“If musicians and creators from overseas face barriers and costs getting into the UK, audiences here could miss out on seeing some of their favourite acts,” Njoku-Goodwin said.

A petition has been launched calling on the UK government to negotiate with the EU for a visa-free work permit for musicians. “So many MPs namedrop bands and artists in order for them to seem relevant/ cool. We now need them to help us,” Tim Burgess said when sharing the petition on Twitter.

ARTY shines in remix of Griff Clawson’s ‘Chasing Highs’ – Dancing Astronaut

Emerging pop artist from Los Angeles Griff Clawson has enlisted ARTY‘s electronic prowess for a remix of his acoustic original, “Chasing Highs,” which receives a sparkling reconstruction. The singer-songwriter has previously displayed his vocal talents within dance music through his respective 2019 and 2020 released tracks “All I Want,” with Boombox Cartel and “You and Me Now,” with Manila Killa and Devault.

The distinguished Russian DJ breathes new life into the mellow-toned track, elegantly crossing over synth-pop and progressive as he deploys lush layers that provide a glistening spectrum of modern and nostalgic resonance. The remix follows ARTY’s EP From Russia With Love (Vol. 3), released in October, and marks the second time collaborating with Clawson following their Armada Music single, “You’re Not Alone.”

Petition launched to secure visa-free touring for bands following Brexit deal

A petition has been launched calling for the government to secure visa-free travel for artists and other creatives in the EU following the end of the Brexit transition period.

The UK will officially fully leave the European Union on January 1, 2021, with the government having finalised a deal on December 24.

That agreement allows workers in several industries to enter the EU without a visa, but does not include musicians in the clause. To tour Europe, bands and artists may need secure visas for each country they are scheduled to perform in. If that is the case, touring on the continent will become far more costly and harder to afford for many artists and crew members.

“We would like the UK Govt to negotiate a free cultural work permit that gives us visa free travel throughout the 27 EU states for music touring professionals, bands, musicians, artists, TV and sports celebrities that tour the EU to perform shows and events & Carnet exception [allowing the temporary import or export of goods without having to pay duty or VAT] for touring equipment,” the petition read.

The petition’s creator Tim Brennan added: “As a freelancer I and many like me travel through the EU countless times a year on different tours and events, this will become impossible due to cost and time if we do not have visa free travel.”

The list of signatures is now at over 43,000 at the time of writing, meaning the government must respond to it. If it reaches 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for debate in Parliament. You can sign the petition here.

Many fans and artists have already shared the petition on social media, urging their followers to add their names to the list. “So many MPs namedrop bands and artists in order for them to seem relevant/ cool. We now need them to help us,” tweeted Tim Burgess.

“The UK music industry contributed £5.8bn to our economy in 2019 – for that to continue, we need to be able to tour Europe. Please sign.”

Last week (December 25), UK Music chief executive Jamie Njuko-Goodwin welcomed the government’s EU trade deal, but said it still left “many questions” unanswered for the music industry. At that time, the full extent of the deal and its implications for musicians had not been made clear.

Watch Jake Bugg give Post Malone’s ‘Circles’ a rock’n’roll makeover

Jake Bugg has covered Post Malone – watch his full-band version of chart-topping hit ‘Circles’ below.

‘Circles’ appears on Post Malone’s Grammy-nominated 2019 album ‘Hollywood’s Bleeding’.

For the new cover version, Bugg adds his trademark rock’n’roll swagger to the track, backed by a full band and performed in a studio setting.

Watch Jake Bugg’s version of ‘Circles’ below.

The Nottingham singer-songwriter released his latest single ‘All I Need’ back in October. The track followed his previous 2020 releases ‘Rabbit Hole’ and ‘Saviours Of The City’.

Bugg’s last album ‘Hearts That Strain’ was released in 2017. In a two-star review, NME said: “The defining feature of ‘Hearts That Strain’ may be its puzzling lack of urgency: Bugg started as an heir apparent to the Gallagher brothers, but on MOR-country ballads like ‘This Time’ or ‘Bigger Lover’ he sounds more like an over-earnest James-Blunt-in-waiting.”

Bugg also recently revealed that he is currently writing music for a film about the Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho. A documentary on the 2002 World Cup winner is in the works by the filmmakers Andrew and Stuart Douglas, who have worked on some of Bugg’s music videos in the past.

“They directed a couple of music videos for me and asked if I’d have a go,” Bugg told The Sun. “That’s what I was doing in the previous lockdown. It’s not something I’m going to get tired of. You always want to be involved in the next track.”

Post Malone, meanwhile, almost appeared on ‘Shore’, the new album by Fleet Foxes, the band’s frontman Robin Pecknold has revealed.

The rapper’s love for the Seattle indie band is well documented, and Pecknold revealed that he “came by the studio for one day while we were working in LA and listened to stuff and was super supportive,” adding that “he was down [to appear on the album] but we just didn’t end up having time”.
