Your EDM Premiere: Meet Skylark and His Ethereal, Cinematic Deep Bass

If your bass-dar happened to miss Skylark until recently when he made the nominee short list for Best Newcomer at the Drum&BassArena Awards, you wouldn’t be alone. With so much volume and innovative sound coming out of D&B this year, it’s hard to keep track. That said, it’s time to wake up on this French producer, as he’s really making some interesting music.

Starting with releases in 2018 and 2019 on Music Squad, Impact Music and Dispatch, Skylark was soon making increasingly impressive tracks with DIVIDID, 1985 and VIsion. Now with his first release on Nëu Music, Skylark is coming more and more into his own unique style. The double single “Like This”/”The Shadow” will drop on the German experimental label next Friday, November 27.

The two tracks are a good showcase of the two main elements in Skylark’s still-evolving style. He has what feels like a preternatural ability to combine ambient, melodic elements with deep bass, all while making the work seem very minimal and clean. Both tracks do some deep exploration with vintage tube amp sounds and have fast snares that tie the work together. “Like This” is the heavier offering on the release, with the snares actually driving the track more than any other element. Lots of grinding bass synth makes sure we don’t get too melodic and a creepy, well-manipulated vox sample ties phrases together so those snares don’t run completely amok.

Our premiere today is “The Shadow” and it almost sounds like it could be an extension or coda to “Like This.” the same tube amplifier sounds pepper the intro and the deep bass bits smooth out to something much more melodic and becoming part of the ambient sound design and suddenly opening up the tone of the track to something much more cinematic. While those tight, spinning snares till push the “The Shadow” ever forward, there’s a sense of flow and grandeur to the sound. If “Like This” is minimal deep bass, “The Shadow” is minimal deep bass in a giant cavern underwater, with the sound bouncing off every wall.

Skylark’s is a style that’s both flexible and instantly recognizable. As a newer producer, drum and bass is likely to see all kinds of different output from him but the tightness of his production, his ability to find that sound design sweet spot between minimal and full tilt and the combining of sounds and techniques are already the marks of a top-notch producer. It’s no wonder he was nominated by D&BA this year, and Nëu were very smart to snap up this release.

“Like This” and “The Shadow” drop on November 27 on Nëu Music. Pre-order or pre-save here.

Avicii’s Biography Officially Slated for 2021 Release: Read the Synopsis

Last year, it was announced that Avicii would be receiving an official biography release by Swedish writer Måns Mosesson. At the time, the book was purported to be released in 2020 after Albert Bonniers Förlag received authorization from Avicii Music AB, the company responsible for the late DJ’s assets and brand following his death. The speculation can now be put to bed, however, after the title was added to Germany’s Apple Books with an official release date of November 2, 2021.

Tim Bergling – The Official Biography is described by the publisher as “the sound of a generation – the book of a generation.” It will span over 300 pages and celebrate the success of Avicii while also diving deep into the circumstances that led to his tragic death in 2018. The publisher also shared insights into what fans can expect from the book, writing, “Mans Mosseson, who was close to Avicii, now goes in search of clues in talks with close friends, family members and companions and tells the whole story of his eventful life for the first time. His book is the honest and sensitive portrait of one of the world’s most popular stars of our time, who shaped an entire generation.”

Keith Richards “might get a new wheelchair” to celebrate The Rolling Stones’ 60th anniversary

Keith Richards has joked that he “might get a new wheelchair” to celebrate The Rolling Stones’ 60th anniversary in two years’ time.

The long-running band formed as The Rolling Stones back in 1962, and are set to celebrate 60 years together in 2022.

In a new interview with BBC News, Richards initially claimed that he “hadn’t even thought” about the Stones’ 60th anniversary before joking: “I don’t know [how I plan to celebrate]. I might get a new wheelchair.”

The guitarist then reflected wistfully that “this particular life” has “been pretty exceptional”.

“I’m really at a loss sometimes to sort of figure out how the hell I got here,” he admitted. “But the music is the thing that keeps you going, so that’s what I try and concentrate on.”

Richards recently addressed the Stones’ 60th anniversary plans in another interview with GQ, where he quipped that the band’s plans for the milestone occasion “are to still actually all be alive”.

“First off, I’m going to get through this year and see how we handle next year,” he added. “Because I think at the moment, there are more problems than a Rolling Stones celebration.

“Although I’m very glad that we’re all here, but I’ll leave it at that if I can.”

Back in September, Richards stated in another interview that he “can’t imagine” The Rolling Stones ever retiring.

Extra Terra Fuses Dubstep and Cyberpunk On Sophomore Album, “Projekt 2077”

Cyberpunk has steadily been making its way into EDM, with artists increasingly showing interest in developing their own soundscapes based on dystopian worlds of the future. Extra Terra has been a mainstay in this experimental sound, fusing dubstep with cyberpunk-inspired sonics since as early as 2015. The artist’s latest is his sophomore album, Projekt 2077, a high-intensity project blending his signature sound with dark synthwave, trance and techno stylings.

Released independently on November 13th, 2020, Projekt 2077 is composed of nine tracks meant to “transport you to the year 2077,” Extra Terra said on Twitter. It includes the previously released, Lazerpunk-assisted “Damage,” a powerful and high energy club anthem, and “Street Kid,” a stellar combination of heavy-hitting chords, pitched up synths and a steadily developing melody. Meanwhile, “X Æ A-12” is a clever wink at Elon Musk and Grimes, who famously gave their child the same name. Cinematic, creative and forward thinking, there’s perhaps no better overview of the cyberpunk-electronic movement than Projekt 2077

‘Tim Bergling – The Official Biography’ to be released November 2021 – Dancing Astronaut

Tim Bergling – The Official Biography will be released on November 2, 2021, according to Germany’s Apple Books page for the text, which includes the synopsis and an option to pre-order the book for those residing in Germany. The formal setting of the biography’s delivery date caps off speculation about when the written record of the beloved DJ’s life would come to light. Tim Bergling – The Official Biography was first announced in 2019, during which point Swedish journalist Måns Mosesson was identified as the author. At the time, the official biography was expected to hit shelves in 2020.

Tim Bergling – The Official Biography is described by the publisher as “the sound of a generation-the book of a generation.” The 304-page book will focus not only on Avicii’s successes, but also on the circumstances that led to his tragic death in 2018.

The publisher reports that readers can expect Måns Mosseson, “who was close to Avicii,” to go “in search of clues in talks with close friends, family members, and companions and tell the whole story of [Avicii’s] eventful life for the first time.” Mosseson’s text “is the honest and sensitive portrait of one of the world’s most popular stars of our time, who shaped an entire generation,” the publisher adds.

All proceeds from the book will benefit the Tim Bergling Foundation, a charity established by Avicii’s parents to help those struggling with mental health issues and support suicide prevention. Visit the text’s Germany Apple Books page for more information.

Squeeze’s socially distanced show at The O2 has been rescheduled

Squeeze‘s upcoming socially distanced show at The O2 in London has been rescheduled to 2021.

The gig had been set to be the arena’s first live music event since it was forced to close its doors back in March due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The O2 had planned to scale down its 20,000 capacity to just 4,700 for the show, which had been due to take place on December 5. The venue say that “extensive planning and a number of new safety measures had been put in place to welcome fans back to the arena safely”.

However, the Squeeze gig has now been rescheduled to February 27, 2021 due to the current lockdown in England, which The O2 say has “created logistical concerns”.

“Our arena is the beating heart of The O2 and we hugely miss the live experiences that we’re used to sharing with our fans,” Steve Sayer, VP and GM of The O2, said.

“It’s disappointing to have to delay this show but I would like to say how grateful we are for the support we’ve received from the industry, fans and our partners and we look forward to Squeeze performing in the arena next year.”

Squeeze’s Glenn Tilbrook added: “I was really looking forward to the show at The O2 in December, to be back on the stage with our wonderful band, but of course everyone’s safety is paramount.

“With the show being rescheduled for February, that allows even more time to make this a very special evening. I wish you all well during these uncertain times. Stay safe.”

Tickets for the Squeeze gig are still available from here.

A number of socially distanced gigs have taken place across the UK this year due to the pandemic. Sam Fender opened the outdoor Virgin Money Unity Arena in Newcastle back in August, which ran for an entire month in a festival-style set-up, while another socially distanced festival, Wild Paths, took place in Norfolk in September.

Ultra Files $800,000 Lawsuit Against 2020 Staging Company

Like every other festival in 2020, Ultra Music Festival did not go ahead as planned this past March. Unlike most others, it was really the first major festival affected by the novel coronavirus. And with only a matter of weeks before its event, it must have been a crushing blow to the industry and the festival promoters, Event Entertainment Group.

Beyond the financial hit from missing out on millions from ticket and merch sales, they had already invested nearly $800,000 via a down deposit on constructing the stages with AG Production Services, Inc. Now, Ultra has filed a suit against AG Production in an attempt to recoup its deposit, which the festival says is covered by the force majeure clause in their contract.

Ultra put down a $$798,808.50 deposit on a nearly $1.6 million contract ahead of the festival. But when it was cancelled on March 4, 16 days ahead of the festival, AG Productions did not return the deposit.

According to EDM Tunes, “AG Events told Ultra they had already spent all of the money on payroll, rental gear, trucking, hotel costs, and travel costs. Ultra disputes the travel, hotel, and trucking costs because AG’s people and equipment never came to Miami.”

Ultra is currently scheduled to take place March 26-28, 2021. It’s unclear at this time if that event will still take place due to still-present dangers around COVID-19, or if AG Production will handle the staging.

Drezo Shares Preview of Haunting Unreleased REZZ Collab

Two producers churning out some of the darkest bass in electronic music have teamed up for a sinister collaboration.

Electro house wizard Drezo took to Twitter today to share a preview of an unreleased collab with none other than REZZ. It’s still an ID at the moment and the clip is only 15-seconds long, but you can hear the direction the two are going—and it sounds massive. Signature sounds of both artists are present here, like Drezo’s ominous bass plucks and REZZ’s hypnotic pads. Neither of them have announced an official release date.
