Felix Cartal drops heavy Justice remix under Glass Petals alias

Productivity during quarantine is not issue for Felix Cartal. In 2020, the Vancouver-born musician has released originals like “Mine” and “Harmony,” on top of remixes for Shallou, Anne-Marie, Doja Cat‘s “To Be Young,” and more with his distinguished electronic touch.

While Cartal gears up for the upcoming release of “Lose My Love,” featuring the talents of Gallant and Sad Money, he continues to dip his toes into heavy house waters with his Glass Petals side project. The duo of Cartal and Johnny Jover have been making music for two years, with releases on prominent dance labels like HEXAGON, Heldeep, and CONFESSION.

Now, they’ve remixed Justice‘s “Stress,” adding some dark, orchestra-lead instrumentals to the 2007 classic with deep vocals and perfectly timed house synths to get people moving this Halloween. Cartal reminisces on early DJ days around the release:

“The 3rd show I ever played when I started my DJ career was opening for Justice [and] Busy P at The Arches in Glasgow. An insanely wild night and I got paid with a 12-pack of Heineken (although I was stoked to just get free tickets to the show, the beer felt like a bonus). Glad we could get this out just in time for Halloween—it feels sonically appropriate!!”

Check out the duo’s weekly “Simulation Sundays” Twitch stream, while Cartal himself goes live mid-week for “Wavy Wednesdays.”

Gareth Emery shares acoustic album ‘The Lasers (Unplugged)’

Back in July, Gareth Emery released his fourth studio album The Lasers, designating it as his most personal body of work to date. That body of work gets a bit more personal as the Southampton DJ unveils The Lasers (Unplugged) acoustic version of the LP, revisiting all nine songs fully unplugged. Speaking on his new unplugged album, Emery states,

“This is one for the chilled out Sunday afternoon vibes. One for 2020 when clubs are closed and festivals are cancelled. I’m really proud of how these stripped back versions have turned out. In some ways, the power and message of the songs comes through a lot more.”

The Lasers (Unplugged) subsides from Gareth’s commonly adorned anthemic club tracks as the acoustic revisions feature elegantly arranged piano melodies and melancholic strings, paving a singular experience for listeners. As Laserface is postponed until further notice, Emery previously invited fans to tune into his own hosted pay-per-view livestream concert which featured an all-star lineup of trance vocalist such as Emma Hewitt, HALIENE, and Christina Novelli.

Tomorrowland is Planning a New Years Eve Virtual Festival

Tomorrowland just dropped their documentary Never stop the music – The Creation of Tomorrowland 2020, which gave fans an intimate look into the making of the inaugural edition of the the brand’s “Around The World” virtual festival. However, recent reports revealed that although the organizers went above and beyond to plan the historic streaming event, the ticketed livestream failed to pull in the numbers they desired.

Billboard reports that the online music festival cost around $10 million to fund, but Tomorrowland’s co-founder Michiel Beers clarified it was actually more along the lines of $5 million with the partnerships, sponsorships, and media deals factored in. He shared that they “about broke even.” Despite the underwhelming results, however, the industry veterans behind Tomorrowland are moving forward with another streaming venture. They have announced that a second virtual reality festival is in the works for New Year’s Eve.

The Chainsmokers open up in new interview, discuss mental health, career lows, and more

The Chainsmokers have used 2020 for a much deserved hiatus after eight years on the road, including performing over 180 shows throughout 2019. The duo, comprised of Drew Taggart and Alex Pall, planned their hiatus before the COVID-19 pandemic forced all touring to shut down. They have now made a rare 2020 appearance on Will Briger’s Apple podcast, 1 Hour Intern. The pair discuss their foray into the music industry and how their upbringings have shaped their approach to life.

Taggart addresses his mental health and how he has faced anxiety and depression. The producer notes that he has felt out of control, and he has struggled with a dissonance about how people think of him on the internet compared to how he feels about himself. Taggart also opens up about how success has impacted his mental wellbeing, which he notes is the ultimate irony and something he tends to feel guilty about.

The Chainsmokers also talk about their early career struggles, with an unsure fanbase thinking they were a joke and the two year climb back into pop culture favor. The duo admits that learning to live with the humbling moments that trail successful peaks has been a learned mindset for them over the past eight years. Fans also learn about how each producer picked up music production and the years it took for them to finally see success with their music. Other topics explored include lockdown, their new film, their venture capital fund, and more. Lastly, the pair offer a little hype for when their hiatus eventually ends promising fresh, exciting new music.

Doctor P Has Launched a Drum & Bass Side Project, Freaks & Geeks

Doctor P has broken ground on a new drum & bass side project.

Teaming up with Phil Desborough of famed dubstep group Roksonix, the bass music pioneer quietly unveiled the new alias, Freaks & Geeks, earlier in the month of October after teasing it on social media. A quick skim of Freaks & Geeks’ Twitter account reveals a five-year gap in tweets, which means that Roksonix’s account was most likely re-skinned to reflect the launch of the newly minted super-duo.

Desborough and Doctor P first connected back in 2010 in the offices of the latter’s Circus Records imprint, where Roksonix would go on to release the bulk of their music. Growing up listening to drum & bass, they cite Ed Rush & Optical, Dillinja, and Shy FX as a few of their inspirations. Each went on to pave their own trailblazing paths in the scene, which, at the time, was being revolutionized by acts such as Sub Focus, Noisia, Chase & Status, and the ageless Pendulum.
