‘Jump’ with Defunk’s newest tech house heater [Q&A]

Staying true to his name, Defunk is a serial-sampler of funk and soul, frequently imbuing the styles into his heavier bass productions. This time around, the Calgary-based artist takes his familiar inspirations into a new direction with his foray into tech house, “Jump.”

In addition to the tech aspects, “Jump” draws heavily on bass house influences to help give it an extra bite. Meanwhile, an abundance of samples keeps things light amidst the groovy hits interwoven throughout. Dancing Astronaut caught up with Defunk to chat about his personal genre exploration, the timelessness of funk, and his upcoming plans.

You’re no stranger to funk, but you usually don’t utilize it in such a tech-house style. What inspired the track?

Defunk: “My girlfriend has been getting me into house music in a big way, and opened my eyes to the variety of genres within the house name. The last few years I have been adding a little section of house music into my sets as I move through the tempos during a performance, so it only made sense that I would want to experiment with a song or two to add to my discography and to be able to play out live. Tech-house was something that really caught my attention with the way the basslines were created and the subtle, more nuanced sounds involved.”

“Jump” is absolutely stuffed with samples, do you have a process for selecting what goes into your tracks? Or is it more of a free-flow style?

Defunk: “While it may seem like more of a free-flow process, I actually spend hours combing over samples for the right fit. The vibe and sound of the sample needs to fit and emphasize everything else around it when placed in the song, and not just feel like a needless addition.”

What is it about funk and soul samples and sounds that lends itself to so many genres?

Defunk: “They have a timeless, classic feel to them, and on top of this they always have an uplifting, fun nature. This lends itself really well to party music, where the music is just about having fun at the end of the day. Funk and soul samples have also been used relentlessly throughout the development of the hip hop genre, and hip hop has influenced many parts of the electronic music scene.”

You wrote “the song is not meant to be subtle, it’s meant to make you jump.” What’s your all-time favorite jumping-themed song?

Defunk: “Of the last few years, Cazztek – ‘Came to Get Funky.’”

You’ve released plenty of tracks already this year, do you have plans to squeeze any more into 2020? What’s on deck for you coming up?

Defunk: “I have multiple singles that I am sitting on, a few collaborations in the making, plus an EP in the works. I’m trying to line up something before the year’s end, even with COVID-19 disrupting so many plans and altering the music industry in a huge way. People need that music to continue!”

It’s one of those tunes that stands out in any playlist, and will surely light up your very own house party.

Based on both these artists’ backgrounds this is already a promising collab. Young Italian DJ/producer SLVR has recently proven himself as one of the most unique talents in current dance music, releasing headstrong house tunes on labels like Spinnin’ Records, Musical Freedom, Heldeep, STMPD, and Barong. Meanwhile, Tom Budin has created similar waves from his Australian home ground, delivering fresh, exciting records on labels like Spinnin’ Records, Universal, Hexagon, and Armada.

So, what happens when these guys team up for an ambitious collab on Spinnin’s main label? Well, an inspired piece of dance, that’s for sure. It’s addictive music that builds on ANML KNGDM’s upwinding vocals while unleashing a vigorous house groove featuring tasteful synth chords and nice, dark strings to set the mood. It’s those tasty little stabs that lighten up the chorus, underlining how these two producers have perfectly completed each other with this song – every sound work like a charm.

Together, SLVR and Tom Budin have taken their music next level. With two prodigies at the controls, ‘Down’ has resulted in a remarkable pop record, incorporating the energy of a heated dancefloor, while featuring a high singalong quality. This is one to take you sky high but is also bound to ring in your ears for the rest of the year.

“ ‘Down’ is the very first song I’ve produced in this weird 2020. I thought it was time to take my music to the next level. Once I got the vocal stems by ANML KNGDM I finalized the song with Tom. I always wanted to work with him and finally, we joined our vibes together. This is the biggest record I’ve ever done and I can’t be happier to share it with you.” – SLVR

“When SLVR first sent me the draft idea, I stopped what I was doing and jumped straight into my home studio. I instantly fell in love with the deep vibe of the vocals by ANML KNGDM and couldn’t wait to add my personal touch to the song. After sharing our visions back and forth ‘Down’ was born and I couldn’t be prouder of this enigmatic production.” – Tom Budin

COVID Nightlife Guide: Find Open Venues and Party Safely

Whether we all like it or not, many venues around the country are reopening amidst the global pandemic, COVID-19. Some, like Florida, are allowed to reopen with zero restrictions, though many still choose to do so. Others are bound my state or local guidelines to a variety of venue capacity, temperature, or social distancing restrictions.

Whatever you feel, you can track which venues are opening with a nifty tracker courtesy of Discotech. Their easy-to-use dashboard automatically shows a selection of the most popular cities in the US, with an easy dropdown menu of other cities.

As you can see from the Venue Reopening Status and COVID Stats table below, Las Vegas, Phoenix/Scottsdale, and Atlanta lead the country in the amount of venues reopened. The table also shows the status of clubs from “Opening Soon” to “Permanently Closed” as well as a COVID risk level color chart, including cases per 100k, ICU usage, and more.

If you’re looking to travel — and do so safely — soon, this is a necessary tool to use before planning your trip.
