Lucii Drops Haunting “Wicked” EP Right in Time for Halloween

Lucii has had all eyes on her since joining Liquid Stranger‘s Wakaan imprint as the label’s first female signee. After making her Wakaan debut with the single “Neptune,” she is back to keep the momentum going with her second official EP, Wicked. Prepare for a devious collection that encapsulates her freeform bass style.

She opens with “Spell,” a mesmerizing anthem for anyone who’s ever been entranced by another. The overwhelming whirlwind she pulls you into is sonically expressed in the depravity of the drop. The previously released single “TilI the Day I Die” is next on the lineup. Lucii’s vocals and lyrics share a lot of similarities to Lana Del Rey, oozing with the eerily romantic breathiness that has the ability to captivate a room.

Above & Beyond release anthemic new single “Crash”

Presented earlier on their two-disc Anjunabeats Volume 15 compilation, Above & Beyond impart their latest single “Crash” as an addition to “Diving Out of Love,” which was released earlier this month.

“Crash” poises an electrifying presence with it’s blitzing chord progressions, immense build-ups, and magnifying atmospheres, sentimental to the trio’s main stage anthems a decade ago. Aiding on “Crash” is Grammy-nominated producer Andrew Bayer, adding a dose of allure and mystique to the progressive trance instrumental. For longtime fans, the new track should generate some nostalgia for Above & Beyond’s earlier Tranquility Base tracks.

Stream “Crash,” out now via Anjunabeats.

Beave & Maisie King Turn Drake & Giveon’s “Chicago Freestyle” Into A House BOP

UK’s rising house superstar producer Beave is back on Gameroom Records with ‘Chicago Freestyle’, a deep, techy house cover of Drake & Giveon’s track of the same title.

Bringing along brand new talent Maisie King to absolutely slay the vocals, Beave takes Drakes’ slow, methodical track and uplifts it into the genre of house, similar to how Imanbek reworked Saint Jhn’s “Roses”. This kind of house rework seems to be the thing to do over the past 18 months, so it is refreshing to hear a version that’s not so commercially driven, and of a track that has already been played or reworked to death. Check out this monster bop below!

Beave ft. Maisie King – Chicago Freestyle

Two thirty baby, won’t you meet me by The Bean?
Too early, maybe later you can show me things
You know what it is, whenever I visit
Windy city, she blowing me kisses, no
Thirty degrees, way too cold, so hold me tight
Will I see you at the show tonight?
Will I see you at the show tonight?

Flatland Funk and Smiles Only Link Up for New Single, “Living For Today”

Canada has long been known for its powerful bass music exports, including REZZ, Excision and deadmau5, among myriad others. Now, following in their footsteps are contemporaries Flatland Funk and Smiles Only, who have teamed up for a unique fusion of lyricism and trap on their new track “Living For Today.” Out October 16th via Emengy Records, the single seamlessly blends each artist’s distinct style into one head-banging anthem.

Starting out with an upbeat, vocal-based melody, the tempo of “Living For Today” quickly builds suspense against a soundscape of reverberating, futuristic synths. The track quickly develops into a heavy and complex trap drop, signaling the artists’ aptitude for fusing emotional hooks with unrelenting bass attitude.

Major Lazer Play It Way Too Safe On New Album, “Music Is The Weapon”

Major Lazer blew up in 2015 with the release of “Lean On,” featuring Danish singer MØ and DJ Snake. Though they’d already dropped a debut album two years prior, the absolute might of this song catapulted them to major, global notoriety. It appears with the release of their latest album, Music Is The Weapon, they’ve sadly rested on their laurels and put out a terribly safe and altogether uninteresting album.

It’s possible that our own expectations are at play here, but four tracks in and I couldn’t possibly tell you which song was which apart from recognizing who was singing at the time. Every song has the same formula, peppering in Caribbean musical influences with a variety of reliable synths and drums, and relying on vocalists like French Montana, Alessia Cara, Nick Minaj, or Khalid to bear the weight — or lack thereof — of the production.

The best word for this safe. There is no dynamism, no risks or chances taken. It’s Major Lazer. It’s what we’ve known, I guess, and that’s okay? But it’s not something we’ll likely ever return to days or weeks or months from now with fond memory.

By the time I reached “Trigger” with Khalid, I was tempted to just turn the album off because I honestly didn’t expect to hear anything different. But because I take my job seriously, I reluctantly soldiered on, willing to potentially waste the next 15 minutes of my day out of obligation if nothing else.

Having already heard their single with Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons as a single, I was excited to finally get to something a little different on Music Is The Weapon. But if any of the songs on this album are so-called “weapons,” they’re prop knives without any actual edge.

“Can’t Take It From Me” with Skip Marley is at least a fun track with the horns, and “Jadi Buti” is definitely more of the old flavor we loved about Major Lazer, but coming so late in the album is a huge disservice to all listeners who didn’t have the perseverance to actually make it that far.

Listen to those two tracks, maybe “Que Calor,” and save yourself the time in your day.

Good Morning Mix: RL Grime hones his craft on ‘Halloween IV’ with cuts by Baauer, Djemba Djemba, Chief Keef, and more

2015—firmly within trap music’s golden moment, and four years into his hair-raising Halloween mix series, RL Grime can’t seem to stop one-upping himself. By then, with three previous mixes under his belt, Henry Steinway was already anointed a trap deity at the top of his game, though, rather than slow even slightly, he keeps his foot floored on the gas pedal for his fourth, landing as one of the series’ most memorable installments to date. So throw on a black crewneck, a gold chain if you’ve got one, and a good pair of headphones and strap into “Halloween IV” as we inch closer to the series’ ninth installment later this month.

When the mix opens with a voicemail from comedian Hannibal Buress claiming he’s ready to be, “Chicago’s Avicii,” you know the rest of the session is about to be hot fire. Grime spends the hour lacing together golden era trap hallmarks from Mr. Carmack, Baauer, Djemba Djemba, Shlohmo, Hudson Mohawke, and more, accenting the mix with his own works and highlights from A$AP Rocky, Chief Keef, Sophie, and others. Of course RL Stine stops by for his annual spooky tidings in the mix’s outro as well. From Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs to The Weeknd, with Drake, Alexander Lewis, Future, and more in between, RL Grime’s mixing chops never fail to disappoint, and “Halloween IV” might be one of the trap lord’s finest outings to date.

Now, as 2020’s mix installment approaches, things for Steinway look a little different than they did when “IV” landed. No longer bound to the sonics of 2014’s genre-defining VOID LP, a labelhead marching his fledging Sable Valley imprint forward, and perhaps a generally more seasoned electronic factotum altogether, RL Grime’s next Halloween mix might reflect a more refined tastemaking perspective—though he’ll always undoubtedly be the king of Halloween and the undisputed god of trap.

Dancing Astronaut will continue to revisit each installment of RL Grime’s “Halloween” series daily leading up to the arrival of “Halloween IX” on October 29. Follow the journey with our RL Grime Good Morning Mix series.

Pop-punk meets melodic dubstep on Illenium and Tom DeLonge pairing, ‘Paper Thin’

There’s no doubt that Illenium has consistently flashed alt-rock influences in his music, which he overtly dove deeper into on his elite third LP, Ascend. In what very well could be his most high-profile collaboration as well as the most unprecedented one to date, Illenium has tapped Blink-182 co-founder and current Angels & Airwaves frontman, Tom DeLonge for “Paper Thin.”

“Paper Thin” is a pristine embodiment of 2000s’ rock seamlessly weaved into with today’s melodic dubstep sound that Illenium has undoubtedly helped popularize. Acting as his second 12Tone Music appearance since “Nightlight,” the collaboration is a moderate step—albeit an unhesitating one—into novel terrain for Illenium. DeLonge’s unrivaled pop-punk vocals are refreshing to experience within the electronic arena as Illenium harnesses them in full to yield a final product that falls on the heavier side of his production spectrum. Illenium spoke on the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work alongside Tom DeLonge on “Paper Thin,” stating,

“Paper Thin was really a dream project for me. I got to collaborate with one of my favorite artists ever, Tom DeLonge. I feel like it has the nostalgic pop punk vibes but also really incorporates my sound. I think the blend sounds amazing and I’m so stoked with how this one turned out!”

Listen to Illenium and Tom DeLonge’s new, genre-blurring collaboration below.
