Wolfgang Van Halen on why he’ll never cover Van Halen songs live

Wolfgang Van Halen has explained why he doesn’t cover his father’s band’s songs live.

The musician, who plays under the project Mammoth WVH, performed ‘On Fire’, ‘Hot For Teacher’ and ‘Panama’ at last year’s Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts. alongside The Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins on vocals, Foo Fighters‘ Dave Grohl on bass, and Josh Freese on drums at two concerts in tribute to the late drummer.

“It was wonderful. It was the exception where it was like, this would be the time to do it,” he recalled on ‘Talk Is Jericho’, the podcast hosted by Fozzy singer Chris Jericho. “Taylor was such a huge fan and to get my own satisfaction of doing a direct Van Halen tribute for dad, it felt like the right thing to do in that moment. I’m really proud of it.” [via Louder]

He then explained why that occasion was the exception to his usual rule, where he doesn’t incorporate his father’s songs into his own performances.

“I’m happy to be able to prove myself,” he told Jericho. “The important key distinction is that I’m not doing what my dad did, I’m my own person, I’m my own musician… it’s why I don’t play any Van Halen music or have a plan to play Van Halen music during my sets.

“Even my dad hated doing covers back in the day, his quote resonates with me all the time where he says ‘I’d rather bomb with my own music than succeed with somebody else’s’, and that’s exactly how I feel about playing Van Halen music. I’d much rather fail on my own than succeed heartlessly by playing ‘Panama’.”

Van Halen had previously faced scrutiny from detractors for supposedly failing to honour his father by not playing his songs live.

Earlier this year, after a user criticised him for apparently “taking advantage of his name”, Van Halen made headlines by responding with: “Van Halen is literally my fucking name you grape.”

BTS’ Suga confirms date for military enlistment

BTS‘ Suga has confirmed the date for his military enlistment.

It was announced today (September 17) by Big Hit Music that the singer would be enlisting on September 22.

It makes him the third member of the band to fulfil their mandatory military service, following the enlistment of Jin in December of 2022 and J-hope following suit early this year.

Men are usually required to enlist by the age of 28, though the Order of Cultural Merit awarded to BTS by former president Moon Jae-In in 2018 allows the seven members of the boyband to enlist at 30 instead.

Thank you for your continued support for BTS. We have further information regarding Suga’s military service. Suga turned 30 in March 2023 and thus had to enlist within the next six months.

In their statement, Big Hit said: “Suga will be beginning his required service on September 22. There will not be any official events taking place on the day he starts his service or on the day he enters the training camp. We kindly ask fans to refrain from visiting Suga at his workplace during the period of his service. Please convey your warm regards and encouragement in your hearts only.

They added: “Furthermore, please be mindful to avoid getting adversely affected by unauthorised tours or package products that illegally use the artist’s intellectual property. Our company will take appropriate measures against attempts at any commercial activity that make unauthorised use of artist IP.

“We ask for your continued love and support for Suga until he completes his service and returns. Our company will also strive to provide all the support he needs during this time.”

According to a statement from Big Hit Music last year, the remaining members of BTS will also carry out their military service according to their individual plans. It added that “both the company and the members of BTS are looking forward to reconvening as a group again around 2025 following their service commitment”.

This suggests that some of BTS’ younger members may be enlisting sooner than expected, as Jimin and V are technically only required to enlist by 2025 and youngest member Jungkook by 2027.

Dolly Parton reveals why she never let Elvis cover ‘I Will Always Love You’

Dolly Parton has explained why she never let Elvis Presley cover her hit ‘I Will Always Love You’.

Presley had apparently loved the song and expressed interest in recording a cover, but Parton revealed in a new interview with BBC Radio 2 why it never materialised.

Parton explained that her decision wasn’t because of Presley, but rather because of a conflict with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker.

“‘I wouldn’t let Colonel Tom Parker [have the rights to the song],” she clarified. “Elvis loved it. I talked to Priscilla not very long ago – she said, ‘Elvis sang it to me when we were on the courthouse steps after we got divorced’.

“‘He loved the song and wanted to do it. Had it worked up. They’d already called me to come down to the studio and to hear part of the song.

However, the night before, Parker called Parton and said he wouldn’t do anything with Presley unless he had the publishing rights, and when Parton refused to give up the copyright for the song, he said he couldn’t agree to her terms.

‘I Will Always Love You’ reached new levels of popularity when Whitney Houston recorded her own version in 1992 for the film The Bodyguard.

Parton is currently gearing up to release her 49th solo album ‘Rockstar’, which will be released in November and  will feature nine original songs and 21 covers of rock classics including Prince‘s ‘Purple Rain’, The Rolling Stones‘ ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ and many more.

Last month, Parton  shared her cover of The Beatles‘ ‘Let It Be’ featuring Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Mick Fleetwood and Peter Frampton.

Parton previously shared a cover of Queen‘s ‘We Are The Champions’ from her forthcoming album.

That followed ‘Bygones’ featuring Judas Priest‘s Rob Halford and Mötley Crüe‘s Nikki Sixx, a cover of ‘Magic Man’ with Heart‘s Ann Wilson and ‘World On Fire’.

Liam Gallagher hints that his new album is done

Liam Gallagher has hinted to a fan that his next album is finished.

The singer-songwriter and former Oasis singer’s most recent studio album came in 2022 with ‘C’mon You Know’.

Taking to Twitter/X this weekend, he has now seemingly revealed to a fan that work has been completed on its follow-up.

Asked by the fan when he’s going to announce a tour, Gallagher responded: “I’ve just made [an] album giz a fucking minute.”

Elsewhere, Gallagher recently released a live album from a show at Knebworth in 2022. The gig marked one of his biggest headline shows to date as a solo artist, performing in front of more than 170,000 people over two nights.

Over 170,000 fans attended the shows — which were held across the Jubilee Weekend — last year, and the event solidified the Manchester artist as a stadium-filling act.

The performance also mirrored Gallagher’s previous performance at the venue over two decades ago, when he took to the stage alongside his brother Noel and performed the landmark Oasis shows there in 1996.

In other news, earlier this year Liam’s brother Noel confirmed that Oasis will release an anniversary edition of their debut album ‘Definitely Maybe’ in 2024 to celebrate 30 years since its release.

Although the members seem to have no plans to reunite for the event, Liam announced last month that he had plans to perform the album in full at a “few biblical” venues around the UK.

Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley discharged from hospital following pneumonia infection

Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley has been discharged from hospital following his admittance with a pneumonia infection this week (September 14).

Whibley’s admission to hospital was first confirmed by his wife Ari, who said that Whibley was hospitalised on the day they were supposed to be in Chicago celebrating their eighth wedding anniversary. She added that he will be kept in hospital for several days over the risk of heart failure.

“We spent the entire night in the ER and will now be spending the next few days here in the hospital as he fights through pneumonia. The scariest part is that there is a lot of strain on his heart and they are telling us that there is a possibility of heart failure,” she wrote in an Instagram post.

“This is obviously not our first time in a situation like this but it brings back a lot of really difficult memories seeing him back in a hospital bed connected to wires and IVs.

“I know how strong he is because I have witnessed what he has been able to overcome but that doesn’t make it any easier to see. I’ll do my best to keep everyone updated but if you could keep him in your heart over the next few days, we could really use it.”

Now, Ariana has shared a further update confirming that her husband has been discharged from hospital following successful treatment.

She said he had responded “so well to his treatments” and added that he’s now “under the care of his mother who is a registered nurse and myself”.

She continued: “The pressure and strain on his heart and lungs has improved and he is able to breathe without as much pain.

“I can’t tell you how truly grateful we are for the community around us. We knew we had support but the outpouring of love for our family has been absolutely overwhelming and we can’t begin to say how much it has meant to us and helped us stay positive through this.”

Whibley was previously hospitalised in 2014 for severe liver and kidney damage caused by alcohol abuse. He spent nearly a month in hospital and was told by doctors that if he had one more alcoholic drink, he risked death.

Back in May, Sum 41 announced that they are to split following their upcoming tour dates and a final world tour.

In 2022, Whibley revealed that the band had completed a new double record called ‘Heaven And Hell’, which will be released before the Canadian quartet go their separate ways.

Speaking about the ‘Heaven’ half of the two-disc project, Whibley explained: “Some weird nostalgia kicked in because of the pandemic. A lot of other people were retreating to things that made them feel good in the past.

“It all made sense to me why pop-punk is coming back: it’s feel-good music. There’s something that’s happy about it. Something young and innocent and free.”

Leigh-Anne Pinnock hints debut album will be released next year

Leigh-Anne Pinnock has hinted that her debut solo album could be released in 2024.

Pinnock, previously of the band Little Mix, released her debut solo single ‘Don’t Say Love’ in June. The garage and house-inspired track was produced by Jon Bellion and Pete Nappi and co-written by Aldae, and sees the star deal in the complexities of love. She also featured on Jon Batiste’s recent track, ‘Running Away’.

Appearing on Amazon Music’s +44 podcast with hosts Zeze Mills and David ‘Sideman’ Whitely, Pinnock hinted that a solo album could arrive as early as next year.

She told the podcast hosts: “Well, I mean, it’s definitely in the works. Yeah, to be honest, coming together quicker than I think anyone thought, which is good. I reckon next year for sure. Because I want to tour like I want to perform, I belong on stage.”

Speaking about the transition from being a part of a group to a solo artist, Pinnock added: “It’s been a hard sort of transition. I remember, when we did ‘Shout Out To My Ex’ and when streaming started taking over and it really started coming in. I’m so old school, I’m trying to kind of get used to it I guess but with social media and TikTok, that is such an important part of any campaign. We have to set time aside for that. Whereas before it’d be like oh, forget time, we’ll figure it out.”

She added: “It’s incredible what Little Mix have done and what we’ve achieved, we’ve absolutely killed it. But now I am on my own and not all of the Little Mix fans are going to come along with me, I have to build a new fan base. Yeah, so I do feel like a new artist to some extent…”

Little Mix formed in 2011 and became one of the best-selling girl groups of all time by 2022, as well as one of the UK’s biggest-selling acts. They sold over 75million records worldwide and earned six UK Platinum albums and over 15billion streams.

The band’s original line-up included Jesy Nelson, Jade Thirlwall and Perrie Edwards. Nelson left the group in 2020 before Thirlwall, Edwards and Pinnock took a break from the group last year.

Last December, she told fans that new music was on its way: “I’ll be giving you as much music as I can as soon as it’s ready.” She promised she was “working really hard” on it and is “so happy with what we’ve made so far.”

Following the band announcing their split in 2021, Pinnock made her film debut in the Christmas movie, Boxing Day. She praised her fellow Little Mix members for their support whilst she did the role.

The Streets’ Mike Skinner says his new film was both a “nightmare” and an “obsession” to make

The Streets Mike Skinner has opened up about his new film, describing it as a both a “nightmare” to get made and his “obsession.”

  • READ MORE: The Streets at South Facing Festival: celebratory, silly and absolutely heroic

Skinner has spent ten years working on getting his film, The Darker The Shadow, The Brighter The Light, to screens. A murder-mystery, it’s described as “tripped out neo-noir” and follows the life of a struggling DJ. The film has been created, written, directed, filmed and edited by Skinner, who also stars in the project.

Speaking to Sky News at the premiere of the film in London, he opened up about the difficulties of getting the film made, alongside his determination to make sure it reached the big screen.

Speaking about what to expect, Skinner told Sky News: “it’s a musical but the songs are the voiceover.” He joked with fans not to expect “jazz hands or dancing around on lampposts,” adding that “it’s a very simple story that started out almost like a film noir type thing, but then got carried away.”

Opening up about the project, he added: “Knowing that I’m working on this film and then working on this film has been a nightmare. It’s been an obsession…I kind of did everything myself so it just didn’t stop, really. The tunnel was very long, very dark, and there was no light – apart from a train, maybe.”

Speaking about the difficulty of getting the film financed, Skinner said: “We did try to get funding. No one wanted to give us any money. That was 2019. I mean, established directors can’t make films, you know, so I’ve not got a chance in hell, really. I kind of knew that. End of 2019 I just thought, I’ve just got to do this myself or it’s not going to get done. And it’s really hard.”

Now, with the film launching, he said he was “completely overwhelmed” by it finally arriving in cinemas.

Justin Timberlake says new *NSYNC track is “a love letter” to fans

Justin Timberlake has opened up about the new *NSYNC track, which was announced earlier this week by the newly reunited band.

The track, which is their first new song in over 20 years, is called ‘Better Place’ and will see the famous nineties boyband reunite once more.

The boyband – comprised of Justin Timberlake, Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone and Lance Bass – reunited at the 2023 MTV VMAs on Tuesday (September 12) where they presented Taylor Swift with an award.

It comes after a comeback track from the group was teased via posters for the third Trolls film, Trolls Band Together. The promos featured the *NSYNC logo, with a QR code directing fans to a website containing a snippet of music.

Since then, Timberlake has taken to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the track and how he pitched the idea to other *NSYNC members.”So many stars aligned…If we do this song, it’s a love letter to our fans,” Timberlake told them. “I would be honoured to have the group on the song.”

“When the stars align… got my brothers back together in the studio to work on something fun and the energy was special,” Timberlake wrote on the caption to the video. “Better Place is coming 9/29. LOVE Y’ALL.”

You can watch the clip here:

*NSYNC hinted at the announcement on social media recently by lip-syncing to a classic scene from Friends, in which Joey and Rachel discuss a secret within the group.

‘Better Place’ marks the boyband’s first release of new material since 2002. Timberlake embarked on what would become a hugely successful solo career that year, with *NSYNC officially parting ways in 2007.

Prior to this week’s VMAs appearance, the group came together at the same event in 2013 before reuniting for their Hollywood Walk Of Fame ceremony in 2018.

*NSYNC presented Swift with the Best Pop award at the 2023 VMAs. Expressing her excitement over the comeback, the ‘Midnights’ singer said: “I had your dolls. Are you doing something? What’s gonna happen now? They’re gonna do something, and I need to know what it is.

“You guys are pop personified, so to receive this from your golden pop hands is… it’s too much.”

One dead, one injured following shooting near Sexyy Red video set

A shooting took place this week (September 14) near to where musician Sexyy Red was filming a music video.

NBC6 reported that the shooting took place at a gas station near the Oakland Park Flea Market across from where where the rapper and a crowd of extras were gathered for filming.

According to reports, one person was killed and another injured.

In a statement on Instagram Stories, Sexyy Red confirmed that the shooting didn’t happen on her video set but opposite to where it was being filmed.

“I send my condolences to the family of the man who lost his life and prayers up for the person who was wounded,” she wrote.

“But I gotta address the rumors that it happened at my video shoot because shit is not true at all. To be clear it happened at a gas station across the street from my video set. Florida Highway Patrol and Broward County Sheriff confirmed that the shooting wasn’t on my set.

“We finished the shoot at a different location and everyone from our set went home safely. Period,” she added.

The Sheriff’s Office said that gunfire erupted “near a video shoot being filmed in the area” and that detectives were still investigating what happened.
In a statement to Billboard, the Broward County Sheriff’s office confirmed officers responded to a shooting call at 7:54 pm in Oakland Park and deputies found “two individuals suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.”
The statement added that one unnamed victim was pronounced dead at the scene and another was transported to a local hospital and that the shooting took place “near” the spot where the video was being filmed. They added: “detectives are working to confirm if the two are related.”
Reflecting on the success of her breakthrough song earlier this year, Red – real name Janae Nierah Wherry – told NME: “I knew it was a good song because I felt like it was something so relatable and funny, But once I saw it going viral… I’m still in shock at how crazy it went because I still didn’t expect it.”
