Vinyl’s extended comeback hit record highs in the US this month. During the week of November 27 to December 3, vinyl sales increased by 56 percent to a hearty 1.25 million units amid Black Friday sales. Not only is that the largest sales rate documented since Nielsen Music began tracking sales data in 1991, this is only the second time in history vinyl sales have ever broken 1 million units in a one-week period.

Though chains such as Target, Walmart, and Barnes & Noble certainly aided the push of vinyl sales for the holidays, independent stores’ physical sales accounted for an impressive 542,000 units, approximately 43 percent of the total count. Top album sellers include Harry Styles’ Fine Line, the soundtrack to A Charlie Brown Christmas, and Billie Eilish’s When We Fall Asleep Where Do We Go?

If anything, Black Friday 2020 certainly solidified vinyl’s position in the market against other physical formats. Regardless of how much technology improves, it seems fans find something tangibly special in those discs and record players that can’t be recreated.
