Meek Mill, 21 Savage, Lil Baby, Lil Durk to team up for new music platform

Meek Mill, 21 Savage, Lil Baby and Lil Durk are potentially teaming up to build a new music platform.

The collaboration between the rappers was first announced by Meek Mill on Twitter last weekend.

“Me lil baby Durkio tryna get somebody in Silicon Valley to build us our own music platform we can be majority owner in,” he tweeted. “We will pay!! We need top Silicon Valley steppers please!”

Meek Mill followed up with another tweet that announced 21 Savage’s involvement in the project, which the group were hoping to commence in 2021.

The next day, Meek Mill expanded upon his vision for the project, which aimed to donate a percentage to “the people we make money from”, and also sought to “maximize black wealth”.

“we gone start something and donate a % to the people we make money from! We waiting on production now! #culturecurrency coming full blast!!!” he tweeted.

Meek Mill continued in a separate tweet: “Respectfully to Spotify too we get millions with them one of my biggest platforms I sell on! We need their help too… but we gone build something where we can maximize black wealth and we not gone fail by any means ‘we got a real backing behind us’ let’s get it”.

However, the rapper noted that the project was not aiming to be “the same thing” as Spotify, Tidal and Apple Music.

“We not even trying to build the same thing as Spotify …tidal … apple we wanna build a platform/tool and connect it with those big big companies and eat and build up some billion dollar shit! If you a big rapper that sale a lot snd [sic] got a lot of influence rap in for %.”

Carl Cox condemns partying during pandemic in new interview

In a new interview, Carl Cox reflects on effects of the pandemic, divulging not only his opinions on partying, but also where the industry goes from here.

Having been a figure in the evolution of dance music through the years, from the height of the UK superclub scene to modern day festivals, the superstar DJ knows more than anyone the return of full-scale events will take time. Condemning partying during the pandemic, Cox stated,

“It’s irresponsible to be out there at the moment based on how everyone is trying to do the right thing to get past this. Having a party in a pandemic, it doesn’t make any sense whatsoever…If you are really into it, you’ll wait. If you are not into it and you just want to react or act out, it’s going to be the very thing that makes it worse.”

Cox also had wisdom to share regarding the future of the club and festival circuit, which he believes has effectively reset as a result of COVID-19. The longtime performer discussed,

“We have to go back to the small clubs again…and what’s going to happen eventually with the recession and people spending and how they feel about being around other people, have a massive impact on what we do next and also how we do it.”

Like other creative peers, Cox has also used quarantine to launch new projects including 19-track album Carl Cox Mixes Awesome Soundwave and livestream series “Cabin Fever.” On advice for DJs and producers, he says to simply make music now, on the basis that,

“At the moment we don’t have a dancefloor. So, there is no point making hit records for the dancefloor…This is a great time for creativity now. Something is going to come out of it in the sense that you’ve made a point, a statement, about what’s happened to you individually.”

“These songs couldn’t slot into the first three records”

Lauren Mayberry has given some hints at what to expect from Chvrches’ next album, which is due to arrive in spring 2021.

The record will be the band’s fourth, following 2018’s ‘Love Is Dead’ and their 2019 collaborative single with Marshmello, ‘Here With Me’.

Speaking to the Guardian, Mayberry said that the new album had “definitely got the Chvrches DNA” but that the songs on it couldn’t “slot into any of the first three records”.

“You want it to be like your band, but you want it to be enough of an evolution that it’s not the same thing over and over again,” she said. But how do you do that? Especially with modern-day pop music where there’s a pressure to take your sound and put it through the filter of what is popular. I think you can tell that it’s us – it’s not screamo or anything like that.”

The singer also discussed writing and making the album during the coronavirus pandemic, explaining they had already begun work on it before the global health crisis took hold. “The theme of it didn’t necessarily change, but it evolved because of the circumstances of 2020,” she explained.

“I think it was also helpful for us to be removed from the bullshit of the music industry. Everybody says that you don’t think about that stuff when you’re making a record, but in practice you totally do. You might shut the door, but it’ll sneak in the window.”

She added that working on a record during a pandemic gave the band time to “unpack and fix” eight years of “baggage”. “As a result, I think this is the most excited that anybody in the band has been about an album since the first record,” she said.

Mayberry previously spoke about the album-making process in September, saying it had been a “learning curve”.

Meanwhile, Chvrches shared a new version of their track ‘Forever’ earlier this year, dubbed the ‘Separate But Together Version’. Recorded during the pandemic, it saw the group perform the track from their respective homes.

Square reportedly interested in acquiring TIDAL – Dancing Astronaut

Square Inc. is interested in acquiring streaming service TIDAL, according to reports from Bloomberg News. Square’s CEO Jack Dorsey (more famously known as Twitter’s CEO) reportedly met with TIDAL’s owner JAY-Z to discuss the potential acquisition. So far, no news of a finalized deal has been made public.

Square, a merchant services company most associated with their credit card readers, is reportedly looking to diversify their portfolio, thus the interest in TIDAL. TIDAL last changed hands five years ago, when JAY-Z purchased the service for $56 million.

Tidal is the only artist-owned streaming service and has often used platform-exclusive music to draw in listeners, including 2016’s eventful The Life of Pablo rollout. However, at the moment TIDAL’s unique selling point for users is that it offers the “highest quality audio available” for an increased monthly rate. Earlier this year in March, TIDAL hosted a week of free streamed concerts exclusively available to its users.

EDMsauce.com Artist of the Week: James Dece

James Dece’s latest release brings it massive and comes in hot to the EDM Scene. The two track EP entitled “Shimmer / Total Annihilation” touch upon many core components to the Bass Music Realm such as Dubstep, Midtempo and Hardcore. However, to create a sense of musical polarity, these elements are carefully implemented with highly melodic riffs that pay homage to a nostalgic 80’s synthwave style of music. But what is there further beneath this release than just the music genres that it encompasses?

For some, the title tracks may be a dead giveaway as to what influenced this music, but for those who are unaware, this release was influenced by Alex Garland’s 2018 sci-fi horror film Annihilation. In this film, there is an outside Alien Force that creates a “Shimmer” on Earth, which creates a beautiful aura and transformation of the planet, yet also thinly veiling a dark and dangerous nature behind this. This is evident in the musical nature of this EP release as well, providing a duality, and yet proving these two sides of music can somehow coexist. A rather interesting fact is that this release does not contain any samples or musical elements from the film Annihilation at all.

“It sounds simple, but sometimes it’s hard for producers to focus on just one song, especially when they have an entire concept in mind. The polarity created within the film Annihilation was essentially the genetic basis and influence behind how I created this music. Melodic, emotional and epic intros and breaks, with intense build ups that compliment an ominous and harsh drop.”

It is all original music. Being a sci-fi film buff, James Dece was so infatuated with this film that he was inspired to create his own score if you will. However not being an actual film score, it had been very much so translated into a bass heavy format where it can be enjoyed by listeners as well as DJ’s of the EDM community. Although his music may have a very immense sound, Dece did not use a huge expensive studio to create this work, only his laptop, headphones and monitors. This just further proves to newer and aspiring producers that you do not need all of the expensive equipment and studio space to create something with an immense sound.

“I really wanted the listeners to see what I saw of this masterpiece of a film through music I created. Without taking even a sample of audio from this film at all, I have created my own original interpretation of it. How something created so beautifully through film can be experienced through a bass music spectrum.”

With the help from Play Me Records, Dece was able to release something entirely original musically, and artwork wise, hoping somewhere someone will also see this film from his perspective, and find the true beauty within it.

“This may sound a bit cliche, COVID gave me a chance to really focus on myself, and especially this project that means a lot to me. I give a lot of credit to all of the music artist out there who have used this time to put out some great inspirational music. People both creating and enjoying music is something that cannot and will not die, and my heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones to this pandemic. “

After only one month, James Dece’s release has already charted on Repost Exchange at #9 in the Dance/EDM Top 40, and #22 in the overall Top 40 charts. It has also been gaining headway on Spotify Playlists such as Crossfit, Bass Music Monsters, and Bass Boosted Music 2021.

“As far as 2021 goes, I already have a four track EP signed for release with Recall Records, which is a spectrum of bass music including dubstep, midtempo, electro house and speed house. Along with this, I have a three song demo reel completed, which is unsigned and undisclosed submission targets, which is going to remain mysterious for now.”

Grimes has a ‘Miss Anthropocene’ remix album on the way

Grimes has announced a ‘Miss Anthropocene’ remix album is on the way – and it’s arriving very soon.

The musician released her fifth album in 2020, five years after her critically acclaimed fourth record ‘Art Angels’.

Now, an album featuring reworkings of ‘Miss Anthropocene’s’’ tracks will be released on January 1. It features contributions from BloodPop, Richie Hawtin and more, including two remixes that Grimes premiered in a recent DJ mix for Apple Music.

The tracklist for the ‘Miss Anthropocene Rave Edition’ is as follows:

‘So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth (ANNA Remix)’
‘Darkseid (Richie Hawtin Remix) [ft. 潘PAN]’
‘Delete Forever (Channel Tres Remix)’
‘Violence (REZZ Remix) [ft. i_o]’
‘4ÆM (Original Mix)’
‘New Gods (Tale of Us & Âme Remix)’
‘My Name Is Dark (Julien Bracht Remix)’
‘You’ll Miss Me When I’m Not Around (Things You Say Remix)’
‘Before the Fever (Original Mix)’
‘IDORU (Modeselektor Remix)’
‘We Appreciate Power (BloodPop® Remix) [ft. HANA]’

Earlier this month (December 19), Grimes updated the artwork for ‘Miss Anthropocene’. She previously shared the imagery on Instagram in April, saying: “I polled a bunch of ppl and everyone said not to use it (??) but I wish I trusted my gut. I fucking LOVE this painting.”

The record was named one of NME’s 50 best albums of 2020, saying: “Such is her refusal to be pigeonholed, after the blissful art-pop of 2015’s ‘Art Angels’, Grimes’ only option was to take a sharp left turn.

“Her fifth album was a much denser, more claustrophobic effort that gleamed like dark chrome, reflecting the looming climate crisis and turmoil in her personal life as her relationship with Tesla CEO, Elon Musk put her firmly under the celeb spotlight. This was Grimes trying to make sense of her changing world.”
